Boeing along with its primary union announced plans to continue contract discussions on Tuesday, aiming to reach a resolution to a strike that has involved around 33,000 factory workers on the U.S. West Coast.
The company and the union, whose members have been striking for 25 days, restarted negotiations on Monday with federal mediators present.
Despite all-day meetings with Boeing and federal mediators, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers reported no substantial progress by the end of Monday, stating, “We will resume talks tomorrow.”
Boeing has confirmed that mediation efforts will persist on Tuesday.
The union is advocating for a 40% salary increase over the next four years and wants to reinstate a defined-benefit pension that was eliminated in a previous contract ten years ago.
Last month, Boeing presented an enhanced proposal it labeled as its “best and final,” which offered workers a 30% salary increase and a restored performance bonus. However, the union indicated that a survey of its members revealed this offer was insufficient.
This strike has disrupted the production of Boeing’s popular 737 MAX jet, in addition to its 777 and 767 widebody planes. The 737 MAX is crucial for Boeing’s revenue, especially now as the company faces challenges with low profit margins in its defense sector.
