SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota – Tim Johnson, the former U.S. Senator from South Dakota, has passed away at the age of 77, as confirmed by his family in a press release on Wednesday morning.

According to the announcement, Johnson died on Tuesday evening, surrounded by loved ones, due to complications from a recent stroke.

“As a fourth generation South Dakotan, he took immense pride in representing the state he cherished, but he viewed his family as his greatest treasure,” his family shared. “Witnessing the growth and achievements of his three children and eight grandchildren with his wife of 55 years, Barbara, brought him unparalleled joy and satisfaction.”

A statement from South Dakota Republican Governor Kristi Noem announced that flags will be lowered to half-staff across the state until Johnson is laid to rest.

“Having worked alongside Tim Johnson, I admired his dedicated service to the people of South Dakota. He truly embodied the spirit of public service,” Noem remarked. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”

Johnson’s political career in South Dakota spanned 40 years, beginning as a state legislator in 1979 and later serving as the state’s congressional representative from 1987.

“Kimberley and I extend our condolences to all South Dakotans on the passing of former Senator Tim Johnson,” said Senator John Thune, R-S.D. in his statement. “Recognized for his determination and commitment, Tim was a devoted leader who dedicated his life to public service with integrity and compassion. He tirelessly supported rural America and leaves a lasting legacy that will be felt for generations. We are keeping Barbara and their family in our thoughts during this time, and Tim’s remarkable life will continue to inspire many.”

Senator Mike Rounds, R-S.D., noted on X, formerly Twitter, that “Tim Johnson devoted over 35 years to public service for South Dakota, including holding the Senate seat I currently occupy. His passion for South Dakota was immense. His passing will be deeply felt across the state, especially by his wife Barbara and their family. My prayers are with Tim’s loved ones.”

Representative Dusty Johnson, R-S.D., expressed on X that “Senator Tim Johnson dedicated decades of service to South Dakota and our nation. I am saddened by his passing and my thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Tim Johnson was first elected to the Senate in 1997 and completed three terms before choosing not to seek re-election in 2014, marking him as the last Democrat to hold a statewide office in South Dakota.

“Tim always said that neither the left nor the right had all the best ideas, and that through collaboration, we could discover common ground for the benefit of our nation,” his family concluded in their statement. “His perseverance in both work and life set an example for all of us. He will be greatly missed, and our lives are richer for having experienced his love and support.”
