Jayden Daniels dismisses Lamar Jackson comparisons: ‘We’re not the same’
Jayden Daniels, the quarterback for the Washington Commanders, has often been compared to Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens throughout his career.
Although he appreciates the acknowledgment, Daniels insists that such comparisons aren’t accurate, especially before entering his Week 6 game against the two-time MVP.
“I really don’t like being compared to Lamar,” Daniels stated to reporters on Wednesday, as reported by ESPN’s John Keim. “We’re distinct players. I want to be recognized as Jayden Daniels, not as some other player.”
While Daniels expressed his admiration for Jackson, noting their mutual respect, he believes their styles of play are quite different even though they both possess tremendous agility and the ability to evade defenders.
“I enjoy watching great quarterback performances,” said Daniels. “I respect how he plays and his approach to the game. But we’re different quarterbacks with unique styles. I commend him for his contributions to the sport and for inspiring African American quarterbacks.”
Even though he isn’t fond of comparisons, Daniels has grown accustomed to them. He faced such scrutiny during the NFL draft process, which has continued during his early career, especially as his statistics after five games resemble those of former Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III during his rookie year in 2012.
This is why Daniels is examining the quarterback position broadly as he seeks to develop his own unique style in the NFL.
“For me, it’s about going out there to be distinctive and different from everyone else,” Daniels remarked. “I value what others do because there’s always something to learn from fellow quarterbacks in the league. I’m open-minded.”
Thus, while Daniels holds Jackson’s playing style in high regard, he is not specifically trying to emulate the Ravens quarterback.
Jackson acknowledged in his own press conference that he admires Daniels’ mindset towards the quarterback role.
“He’s got his own game,” Jackson remarked. “At the end of the day, we’re both striving to create our own legacies, not just follow in anyone else’s footsteps.”
