Unraveling the Drama: The Stephen and Monica Story on ‘Love is Blind’ and Understanding Sleep Tests

What transpired between Stephen and Monica on ‘Love is Blind’? Also, what is a sleep test?

Warning: This article contains spoilers from the first nine episodes of Netflix’s “Love is Blind” Season 7 (currently available to watch).

In the latest episodes of “Love is Blind,” another couple has parted ways.

Monica Davis and Stephen Richardson ended their relationship after Monica discovered explicit text messages on Stephen’s phone that were directed at another woman, according to Netflix.

The revelation, which occurred off-camera, was described by Monica, 37, as “like a dagger to the chest.” She expressed her devastation over the content of the messages to Entertainment Weekly.

Upon confronting the 34-year-old Stephen about the texts, he explained that he had sent the messages while intoxicated during a sleep test. He admitted to his “completely stupid mistake” and tried to soothe Monica, but she made it clear that she was done with the relationship.

“At this point, I don’t think there’s anything I could say that you’d believe,” Stephen stated during the episode. “I’m almost embarrassed by how much of my heart I’ve given you.”

Monica shared with EW that she stumbled upon the texts quite unexpectedly and could not recall the entire contents, only that the messages were “very sexual.” She remembered one in particular that said, “No one’s ever been able to satisfy my kinks the way you do,” highlighting an exchange between Stephen and the other woman.

“They were just going back and forth,” Monica recounted to the outlet.

Monica preferred that the breakup be filmed

Monica told EW that she insisted their breakup should be recorded so that Stephen could not later pretend it hadn’t occurred. However, she remained vague about the exact timing of their split, suggesting viewers watch the reunion episode set to air on Oct. 30 for the full story.

After their relationship officially ended, Monica requested that Stephen reimburse her through Venmo for the costs she had incurred during their time together. She stated that past experiences with ex-boyfriends who owed her money influenced her decision.

“It was mainly for relationship-related expenses, like groceries and one dinner—it totaled a couple of hundred bucks,” shared Monica, a sales executive, with EW.

Despite the emotional turmoil, Monica expressed her gratitude for the journey and remarked that she “wouldn’t change a thing.”

‘Cherished memories,’ according to Stephen

Stephen shared that he wouldn’t trade his time on the show “for anything.” He posted several pictures of himself and Monica on Instagram, saying: “For a show that emphasizes context and encourages looking beyond appearances, its fans often treat things too literally.”

“These are all valued memories that I cherish greatly, both on and off the screen. Experiences that I never anticipated, shared with extraordinary individuals,” expressed the electrician.

As he departed their shared living space in the episode, Stephen apologized to Monica for the pain he caused her and for squandering her time.

“There’s nothing I can do to change this. I will have to live with this,” he acknowledged. “I genuinely apologize for hurting you, for wasting your time, and for my actions on this show. I shouldn’t have participated in it.”

Stephen later confessed to People that he fell in love with Monica “within 10 days” while in the pods.

“I can categorically affirm that, despite my cynical nature, I fell in love with Monica in just 10 days,” stated Stephen to People. “I truly fell for her during those pod experiences, without a doubt. It was effortless due to the connection we formed.”

“`

The participant stated that the experiment was designed for their benefit.

He mentioned he plans to treat this experience on the show as a chance to learn for his future relationships, aiming to avoid repeating past errors.

“I really messed up while I was drunk during a sleep test with someone who sent me a text,” he revealed on the episode. “I recognize it was a foolish choice.”

What is a sleep test?

A sleep test, or polysomnography, is a diagnostic tool for identifying sleep issues, as per the Mayo Clinic. This evaluation tracks “your brain activity, blood oxygen levels, heart rate, and breathing during sleep,” according to their information. It even examines eye and leg movements.

Before undergoing a sleep study, Mayo Clinic recommends that patients refrain from consuming alcohol or caffeine beforehand, as these substances can disrupt sleep patterns.

‘Waiting 36 years to find you’

Monica and Stephen connected well in the pods and became engaged during a touching proposal.

“I’ve been searching for you for 36 years,” Monica told Stephen, accepting his proposal. “You are the most caring, nerdy, talkative, loving, and compassionate person I know.”

The couple then headed to Mexico along with other pairs, enjoying their time together until Monica found the texts that caused concern.

Who else has split from ‘Love is Blind’ Season 7?

Brittany Wisniewski and Leo Braudy, another engaged couple from the pods, ended their relationship earlier in the season. Although they didn’t get selected to travel to Mexico, they took a trip to Miami, where they realized their chemistry was lacking and felt the engagement wouldn’t lead to marriage, choosing instead to remain friends.

“We had many discussions during the trip and came to a mutual understanding that we didn’t see it leading to marriage,” Leo expressed to People.
