Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s Coats, JFK Jr.’s Wife, to be Auctioned

Items once worn by the late style icon Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, who was married to John F. Kennedy Jr., are set to be auctioned soon.

Sotheby’s auction house has announced that two coats and a jacket that belonged to Bessette-Kennedy will be featured in their Fashion Icons collection next month. Bessette-Kennedy, who rose to fame after dating JFK Jr. and tragically passed away in a plane crash in 1999, gifted these items to her friend RoseMarie Terenzio, as reported by Sotheby’s.

Among the items is a vintage faux leopard coat that Bessette-Kennedy gifted to Terenzio for her first date back in 1996.

Terenzio fondly described Bessette-Kennedy as her “fashion fairy godmother,” recalling, “Whenever I had a date, Carolyn would ask, ‘What are you wearing? Come down so we can choose something nice for you to wear together.'”

A black Prada coat and a wool Yohji Yamamoto jacket from 1997, which were rediscovered by Terenzio, will also be part of the auction. Bessette-Kennedy was seen wearing the wool jacket in March 1997 and the Prada coat in January 1997.

The auction house anticipates the garments will sell for between $15,000 and $20,000.

Sotheby’s has gained media attention for selling items that once belonged to notable figures. For instance, last year, Princess Diana’s iconic black sheep wool sweater sold for $1.1 million, setting a record for an item worn by her after an intense bidding session. Additionally, Kim Kardashian won the bid for Princess Diana’s amethyst and diamond pendant, the “Attallah Cross,” for $197,453 at a previous Sotheby’s auction.

The Fashion Icons auction is set to take place from November 27 to December 17. The items will be on public display at Sotheby’s New York from December 5 to 10.
