Al Pacino Enjoys Fatherhood at 84, Texting His 1-Year-Old Son “From Time to Time”

At 84, Al Pacino Enjoys Fatherhood, Texting His 1-Year-Old Son

Al Pacino is relishing his experiences as a first-time father.

In a recent interview with the BBC, the actor discussed his new memoir, “Sonny Boy” (now available), which he partly wrote to share details of his life with his 1-year-old son, Roman.

“I want to be present for this child, and I hope I will be,” Pacino, at 84 years old, expressed. “I aspire to maintain my health so he can know who his father truly is.”

The actor mentioned that he “texts” his son on occasion and finds it enjoyable to connect with him. According to reports, Pacino is no longer in a relationship with Roman’s mother, producer Noor Alfallah.

“Everything he does fascinates me. He is a true source of interest,” he remarked. “We communicate, and I even play the harmonica for him using video calls, so we have created a bond.”

Known for his work in “Serpico,” Pacino mentioned that his friends have asked him why he chose to write the memoir, admitting to the BBC that he has some regrets about it. He explained that he avoided this opportunity for years but felt that a lot has happened in his life that could potentially intrigue readers now.

Pacino Reveals De Niro Could Have Taken His Role in ‘The Godfather’

Pacino is famously recognized for his role in “The Godfather” franchise, but there were moments when he almost lost the chance to portray Michael Corleone.

In his memoir, Pacino narrates how rumors circulated that both he and director Francis Ford Coppola might be dismissed from the film due to Pacino “not delivering” in his performance, despite Coppola being the one who cast him.

“There was a noticeable discomfort from the crew while I was filming,” he noted. “I was very aware of it.”

Pacino lightheartedly suggested that if he had been let go, Robert De Niro (who played Vito Corleone in “The Godfather Part II”) could have stepped into his shoes. “Absolutely. Why not?” he chuckled. “I mean, I’m not irreplaceable.”

Pacino recalled that Coppola moved a crucial scene to an earlier part of the filming schedule to give the actor a chance to prove himself. This scene features his character using a gun hidden in a restroom to eliminate kingpin Virgil Sollozzo and corrupt cop Mark McCluskey.

While filming this scene, Pacino suffered a twisted ankle but was relieved to have an excuse to bow out of the film, though that wasn’t how it unfolded. “Francis presented the restaurant scene to the studio, and when they saw it, there was clearly something there,” he wrote.

Pacino Praises Hip-Hop for the ‘Scarface’ Legacy

Among his other renowned films, such as “Heat,” “Dog Day Afternoon,” and “Scent of a Woman,” Pacino’s role in the 1983 film “Scarface” has achieved classic status.

He attributes this enduring popularity to the hip-hop community.

“The character had depth and the film was impactful,” Pacino noted in his conversation with the BBC regarding his portrayal of Tony Montana alongside Michelle Pfeiffer’s character Elvira. “It was really the hip-hop community that recognized and embraced the film for its narrative.”
