The initial cause of death for Liam Payne has been disclosed.

In a press release on Thursday, the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office No. 16 in Argentina revealed that the One Direction star died from “polytrauma” and “internal and external bleeding” after he fell from the third-floor balcony of the Casa Sur hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Wednesday.

Investigations concerning the details of his death are ongoing, as stated in a release translated from Spanish into English. Authorities suggest that Payne was alone at the time of the fall.

Prosecutors noted that shortly before Payne’s death, hotel staff contacted the 911 emergency line to seek help for a guest who appeared to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol and had caused damage to his room.

The autopsy was performed based on accounts from five witnesses: three hotel employees and two women who were with the musician but reportedly left before his death.

Previously, police in the capital reported responding to the hotel in Palermo after receiving information about an “aggressive man who might be under the influence of drugs and alcohol.”

Authorities in Buenos Aires stated that Payne’s fall led to “extremely serious injuries,” and he was pronounced dead at the scene, as confirmed by Alberto Crescenti, head of Buenos Aires’ emergency medical services, in a statement to local news outlets like Todo Noticias and La Nacion.

Payne rose to international fame as a member of the now-defunct boy band One Direction, alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson.
