Innovative Approach: Utilizing Woodchips and Biochar for Pharmaceutical and Nutrient Water Purification

In a new study, researchers show how a simple system using woodchips and a bit of glorified sawdust --- designer biochar --- can dramatically reduce nitrogen, phosphorus, and multiple common drugs in wastewater. Kmart’s Last Stand: The Final Full-Sized Store Closes Its Doors in the Continental U.S.

Shoppers take note: The last full-sized Kmart in the continental U.S. has closed as the retail giant fades away

Kmart has shut down its Bridgehampton location, the last full-sized store on the mainland U.S., though a smaller version still operates in Miami.

Time has run out for last-minute shoppers at the final full-sized Kmart in the continental United States, as the retail giant dimmed its iconic blue light for the last time in New York.

The Bridgehampton store, located roughly 95 miles east of Manhattan, closed its doors permanently on Sunday night, leaving just a smaller store with a limited range of products in Miami still in business. The company retains a presence in Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

According to The Long Island Business Journal, Target is set to take over the Kmart location at Bridgehampton Commons in the Hamptons. Reportedly, the big-box retailer acquired the lease from Transformco, the parent company of Kmart and Sears, “a few years ago” in preparation for the store’s closing.

Transformco did not provide a comment to YSL News on Sunday.

Challenges Facing Sears and Kmart in the Evolving Retail Landscape

At its height, Kmart operated more than 2,000 stores across the United States and was considered one of the leading names in retail.

Kmart merged with Sears in 2005 in a deal orchestrated by CEO Eddie Lampert, a hedge fund manager. The combined entities struggled to keep pace as online shopping surged and consumer habits shifted.

The merged company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2018, narrowly escaping complete liquidation in early 2019. It was acquired by Lampert, who has managed to sustain the brands on a minimal budget.

Overall, Sears and Kmart have shuttered more than 3,500 locations and eliminated around 250,000 jobs over the last 15 years.
