Satirical poop statue gets permit on National Mall, drawing viewers

A temporary art installation has drawn the attention of many in Washington, D.C.’s National Mall this week.

The installation features a bronze statue of feces placed on the desk of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

A plaque attached to this satirical work declares it as a tribute to individuals involved in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot.

This piece is seen as a protest against former President Donald Trump in light of the approaching 2024 presidential election.

The plaque humorously states: “This memorial honors the brave men and women who broke into the United States Capitol on January 6th, 2021, to loot, urinate, and defecate throughout those hallowed halls in order to overturn an election. President Trump celebrates these heroes of January 6th as ‘unbelievable patriots’ and ‘warriors.’ This monument stands as a testament to their daring sacrifice and lasting legacy.”

The artist’s identity is not clear as of Friday, but YSL News reports that Julia Jimenez-Pyzik of Civic Crafted LLC applied for the permit allowing the installation.

What led to the poop statue’s presence on the National Mall?

As per the approved permit from the National Park Service (NPS), the sculpture is titled “The Resolute Desk.”

The statue was installed on Thursday and is set to remain on display until October 31, according to the permit.

“Given its significance as federal land and a key civic space, the National Mall allows citizens to practice their Constitutional rights of expression and assembly,” stated Mike Litterst, Chief of Communications for National Mall and Memorial Parks, in an interview with YSL News on Friday.

Permits are essential for organized activities in areas overseen by the NPS, Litterst added, and the agency does not evaluate the message being conveyed.

“The issued permits detail the exact conditions for the event to guarantee public safety, protect park resources, and maintain a respectful environment when necessary,” Litterst said.

YSL News has reached out to Julia Jimenez-Pyzik for more information.

Public Reactions to the Poop Emoji Statue on the National Mall

The statue has sparked numerous reactions across social media platforms since its unveiling on Friday.

One individual on X expressed disbelief that a permit was granted for such an installation, describing it as “tasteless.”

Another user commented, “Welcome to America, where a bronze poop statue celebrating those who attempted to undermine our democracy now stands on the National Mall.”

Yet another remarked, “I may not know much about art, but I know what I prefer.”
