Zion Williamson of the Pelicans sidelined indefinitely due to hamstring strain

Zion Williamson, the forward for the New Orleans Pelicans, is sidelined indefinitely after suffering a left hamstring strain, according to the team’s announcement on Saturday.

The Pelicans indicated that Williamson, who has had a history of injuries, underwent medical imaging on Saturday morning to confirm the diagnosis, with plans for further updates to be made public in due time.

This latest injury adds to the struggles of the former No. 1 overall pick from the 2019 NBA Draft and two-time All-Star, who has faced various injuries throughout his career. He has missed games this season due to the hamstring strain and a previous illness.

Williamson’s injury history also includes issues with his feet, quadriceps, and knees, which have limited his participation to just 190 games over five seasons. Last season, however, he achieved a personal best by playing 70 games.

At 24 years old, Williamson signed a five-year, $197 million contract extension in 2022, but it has been reported that the last three years of his contract are not fully guaranteed due to conditions regarding games played and his ongoing battles with maintaining fitness. This season, he earns $36.7 million.

Currently, Williamson averages 22.7 points, eight rebounds, and 5.3 assists for the Pelicans (3-7), who have struggled recently, losing seven out of their last eight games.
