Are banks, post offices, UPS, and FedEx operating on Veterans Day? Here’s what to know

This year, Veterans Day falls on a Monday, and while lots of restaurants, grocery stores, and retail shops will remain operational, banks and post offices will be closed.

Veterans Day, recognized as a federal holiday, originated on November 11, 1918, when an agreement to pause fighting, known as an armistice, came into effect at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, per the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

This date is often seen as the conclusion of “the war to end all wars,” according to information from the agency’s website. Veterans Day is celebrated every year on November 11, regardless of the day of the week.

The day serves to “celebrate and honor American veterans for their patriotism, commitment to the country, and their readiness to serve and sacrifice for the common good,” as stated by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
