Bizarre Bids: Duct-Taped Cheeto Puff Inspired by $6.2 Million Banana Art

Auction for a Duct-Taped Cheeto Puff Draws from $6.2 Million Banana Sale

Bidding for the snack chip on eBay topped $1,000 as of Tuesday evening.

The world’s costliest Cheeto is now listed on eBay.

Cheetos is hosting an auction for a Cheeto Puff affixed to a wall using duct tape on the online auction platform, as shared by the Frito-Lay snack company on Instagram. The top bidder will receive this “one-of-a-kind artwork” along with a quantity of Cheetos equivalent to their bid amount.

The eBay auction had received bids exceeding $1,000 by Tuesday evening, with nearly 50 bids submitted. This creative notion is inspired by a banana art piece that fetched around $6.2 million at a Sotheby’s art auction the previous week.

“No offense to the potassium prince, but we believe we can do better, so we’re launching our own auction,” Cheetos stated on Instagram. “Let’s prove that banana who’s in charge.”

The auction is set to conclude on Thursday at 8:17 p.m. ET, according to the listing on eBay.

Banana Sold for Four Times Its Projected Value

On November 20, a single banana secured with duct tape on a wall was sold for about $6.2 million at a Sotheby’s auction in New York.

This banana was an artwork by Maurizio Cattelan known as “Comedian,” which was described as “hotly debated, passionately cherished, and contended.” It was acquired by a Chinese entrepreneur in the cryptocurrency sector.

The final purchase price was about four times the original estimated range provided by Sotheby’s, which was between $1 million and $1.5 million.

The banana was initially bought for $0.35 before being duct-taped to a blank wall and auctioned on the same day, according to reports from the New York Times.

During the auction, “Comedian” saw its starting price of $800,000 escalate to $5.2 million, plus a buyer’s premium, by the time it was sold, as reported by Reuters.

Who Acquired the ‘Comedian’?

Justin Sun, the founder of the Tron blockchain network, purchased the “Comedian” banana art using cryptocurrency, as per Reuters.

He reportedly mentioned to the auction house that his intention was to consume the banana.

“This is not merely an artwork,” Reuters quoted Sun, stating to Sotheby’s right after the purchase. “It embodies a cultural phenomenon that intertwines the realms of art, memes, and the cryptocurrency community. I believe this piece will generate further contemplation and discussions in the future and will cement its place in history.”
