Miraculous Survival: Missing Hiker Resurfaces After Month in Chilling Canadian Wilderness

Hiker missing since mid-October found alive over a month later in cold Canadian wilderness

A man who disappeared in mid-October while hiking in the icy wilds of Canada has been found alive this week, according to officials.

As stated in a news release from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Sam Benastick was reported missing on October 19.

Benastick was discovered on Tuesday morning after two men on their way to work spotted him on the Redfern Lake trail.

The police were notified of his finding around 11:30 a.m. Benastick was taken to a hospital where officials confirmed his identity. He shared details on how he managed to survive for several weeks.

“Sam told police that he spent a few days in his car before walking to a creek and camping out on the mountainside for around 10 to 15 days,” according to the news release.

He then moved down the valley, created a camp, and built shelter in a dry creek bed. Eventually, he made it to a location where he flagged down the two men, who helped him to safety.

Benastick’s 10-day trip turned into a 50-day ordeal: report

As reported by CBC News, Benastick’s journey began in Redfern-Keily Park in British Columbia on October 7 and was originally planned to last just 10 days. However, he ended up being in isolation for 50 days.

According to reports, more than 100 local volunteers and law enforcement helped with the search efforts. His mother, Sandra, kept people updated via Facebook groups.

When Benastick was located earlier this week, the 20-year-old was found with a sleeping bag around his legs and using two sticks for walking. His uncle informed the outlet that he had suffered from “frostbite and some smoke inhalation.”

Redfern-Keily Park, located in remote northeastern British Columbia, has glaciers, waterfalls, and meadows, and is home to wildlife such as grizzly bears, wolves, lynx, and bison.

According to CBC, hikers in this area could encounter snowy, bitterly cold conditions with temperatures dropping below freezing.

“Finding Sam alive is the best possible result,” stated Madonna Saunderson from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. “Given the amount of time he was missing, we feared that this would not be the outcome.”
