Caitlin Clark Shatters Rookie Assist Record in WNBA
No weather could dampen Caitlin Clark’s spirits on Sunday as she made WNBA history in a game where the Indiana Fever triumphed over the Seattle Storm with a score of 92-75.
Clark achieved her 226th assist in her inaugural season, breaking the rookie assist record previously set by Ticha Penicheiro, who had 225 assists in 1998. Notably, Penicheiro accomplished this in 30 games, while Clark achieved the milestone in just 28 games. With 12 games remaining this season, Clark has a chance to set the record to an almost unreachable level. She concluded the game with nine assists, raising her season total to 232.
The record-breaking assist came from an impressive three-fourths court pass to Kelsey Mitchell, who converted it into a layup, energizing the crowd at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Penicheiro expressed her excitement about seeing her long-standing record fall.
“Records are meant to be broken…it shows growth and evolution. I can’t think of a better player to do it!!” she shared on social media.
“Ticha has been a tremendous supporter of mine since my college days, always there to congratulate me and offer guidance,” Clark said during the ESPN postgame broadcast. “So, to surpass someone like her is truly special. I’m really grateful she’s a legend in our sport. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of many more accomplishments.”
The Indiana Fever had a sluggish start, finishing the first quarter with only 13 points, matching their season-low. However, the team’s offense improved in the second half as they exploited gaps in Seattle’s strong defense. The Fever ended the first half on a 12-5 run and headed into halftime with a one-point lead, despite Clark missing all five of her three-point attempts in the first half.
After halftime, Indiana’s offense kept the energy high, especially in the fourth quarter where they were unstoppable. The Fever scored at will, including making eight out of nine three-point attempts in the final quarter. They outscored the Storm 33-17 in that period, cementing their victory well before the final buzzer sounded. Lexie Hull contributed significantly, achieving a career-high with six three-pointers during the game.
This was Clark and the Fever’s first win against Seattle this season; the Storm had previously defeated the Fever in all three earlier meetings. The 17-point victory marks Indiana’s most significant win of the year.
