FBI Unveils $25,000 Reward for Leads on Suspected Ballot Box Arsonist in Washington and Oregon

The FBI is offering a $25,000 reward for leads on the suspect behind ballot box arsons in Washington and Oregon

The FBI has announced a $25,000 reward for any information about a suspect involved in setting fire to ballot boxes in the Pacific Northwest, just before the presidential election on November 5.

Footage released by the FBI depicts a man driving an older model Volvo S-60 sedan, believed to be the suspect in these cases.

This individual, described as being in his 30s or 40s, is linked to the burning of hundreds of ballots across Washington and Oregon. Authorities noted that incendiary devices used in these fires displayed pro-Palestinian messages and were ignited just days before the election.

FBI releases video evidence of ballot box arson in Portland

The initial fires were reported on October 8 at two ballot boxes in Vancouver, Washington, as confirmed by the FBI. They suspect the same individual also committed additional fires on October 28 at several ballot drop boxes in both Vancouver and Portland.

In the surveillance footage made available by the FBI, a person is shown approaching a ballot box in Portland, igniting an incendiary device, and placing it on the box before leaving the scene. The video captures smoke billowing from the box, which then erupts in sparks and flames.

The video gives a clear look at the Volvo, which may be a 2003 or 2004 model and was noted to have a missing Volvo emblem on its front grille. The car was also seen displaying a fraudulent temporary Washington license plate.

The suspect is reportedly a white male in his 30s or 40s, characterized by thinning hair, and it’s believed he might have some expertise in metalworking or welding.

If anyone has information regarding the suspect, they are urged to contact the FBI’s tipline at 1-800-225-5324 or reach out to any local FBI office. Anonymous tips can also be sent through tips.fbi.gov.

Approximately 500 ballots incinerated prior to the election

The ballot box fires on October 28 in both Portland and Vancouver mirror a previous fire incident that took place on October 8, prior to ballots being mailed out to voters in Oregon.

The first reported arson on October 28 occurred in Portland, where police responded to reports of a ballot box on fire around 3:30 a.m. About 30 minutes later, officers in Vancouver, located around 15 miles away, addressed another similar incident.

In Clark County, Washington, officials indicated that at least 488 ballots were damaged due to a malfunction in the fire suppression system within the ballot box. The county plans to resend ballots to affected voters.

In Oregon, a Multnomah County election official noted that only three ballots were lost, and those voters will be contacted directly.

Afterward investigations showed that a pro-Palestinian slogan reading “Free Gaza” was found on the incendiary devices from all three incidents, according to reports from the New York Times and ABC News citing anonymous sources. It remains unclear if the suspect is linked to pro-Palestinian activism or if these acts were intended to disrupt the election process.
