Former University of Kentucky Student Admits Guilt in Racist Assault Incident

Former University of Kentucky student admits guilt in a racially charged assault case

On Monday, Sophia Rosing, 23, accepted a guilty plea after a 2022 incident involving racial slurs and the assault of another student in a campus dorm.

CINCINNATI — A former student of the University of Kentucky, Sophia Rosing, pleaded guilty on Monday for using racial slurs and attacking another student in a dormitory during 2022.

The 23-year-old, from Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, confessed to four counts of misdemeanor assault, as well as charges of disorderly conduct and public intoxication, according to Fayette County Commonwealth Attorney Kimberly Baird. As part of the plea deal, the prosecutors agreed to change a felony charge for assaulting a police officer to a misdemeanor.

Rosing’s lawyer, Fred Peters, mentioned that the plea followed a mediation session between Rosing and the victims, which was the first opportunity for both sides to communicate since the incident in November 2022. During mediation, the victims had the chance to confront Rosing about the events that transpired, and they ultimately agreed to her plea.

The case gained attention in 2022 after videos emerged online showing a woman, later identified as Rosing, in a struggle with the desk clerk and then with police. The footage included her repeatedly shouting racial slurs.

‘She kicked me and bit my hand’

The charges against Rosing originated from a November 6, 2022 incident where she went on a racist rant while assaulting a Black student. This occurred when she was apprehended following an altercation at Boyd Hall.

An officer from the University of Kentucky Police Department reported in a citation that they responded to Boyd Hall due to complaints about a woman attacking staff members. The citation indicated that Rosing was cornered and was using a racial slur directed at “a group of black females,” continuing to do so as the officer attempted to escort her away, stating she appeared “very intoxicated.”

Following her arrest, Rosing was permanently banned from campus. UK President Eli Capilouto announced via social media that she would not be allowed to re-enroll at the university.

“As a community committed to preventing racist violence, we must also hold individuals accountable for their actions,” Capilouto stated at that time.

Peters expressed that Rosing was compelled to leave the university during her senior year and has faced challenges finding employment due to the criminal charges and the publicity surrounding the case.

“Her life has been in a standstill since this occurred,” he remarked.

Rosing could face a maximum sentence of one year in prison, although her attorney intends to request probation. Additionally, she is required to complete 100 hours of community service.

Records from the court show that Rosing is scheduled to appear in Fayette County Circuit Court for sentencing on October 17.
