Georgia school shooting suspect’s mother faces elder abuse charges, reports indicate
The mother of a 14-year-old student from Georgia, who is facing charges for the Apalachee High School shooting that resulted in the deaths of four individuals, has been indicted for elder abuse following a domestic violence incident involving her mother last year, as per reports.
A grand jury indicted Marcee Gray, 43, on charges including exploitation and intimidation of a disabled person or elderly adult, false imprisonment, criminal damage to property, and theft, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
These charges are not connected to the tragic shooting incident her son, Colt, is alleged to have carried out on September 4, which resulted in the deaths of teachers Cristina Irimie, 53, and Richard Aspinwall, 39, along with students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14 years old. Additionally, nine other students sustained injuries during the event.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation also arrested the teen’s father, Colin Gray, on September 5. Prosecutors have charged him with two counts of murder, four counts of involuntary manslaughter, and eight counts of child cruelty.
Marcee Gray faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison due to the felony elder exploitation charge, reported the newspaper. Attempts to contact Gray for comment were unsuccessful.
Reports indicate that the incident arose when Gray attempted to persuade her 74-year-old mother, Deborah Polhamus, to accompany her to confront her ex-husband, Colin Gray, on November 3, 2023. When Polhamus declined, Gray reportedly restrained her mother by taping her to a chair for nearly a day, seizing her cellphone and causing damage to her home in Fitzgerald, Georgia.
The following day, November 4, 2023, a family friend discovered Polhamus, as reported by the newspaper. On that same date, police in a different case alleged that Marcee Gray had vandalized Colin Gray’s work truck in Barrow County, approximately 3.5 hours away.
Just two days later, on November 6, a deputy from the Barrow County Sheriff’s office arrested Marcee Gray for allegedly hiding her Nissan Rogue with altered license plates and possessing fentanyl, methamphetamine, and muscle relaxants, according to court records.
In December, prosecutors charged her with concealing her license plate, property damage, and family violence. She entered a guilty plea, and a local judge sentenced her to five years in prison, with the first 46 days to be served in confinement, and she was credited for the time already served since November 6, after which she will serve the remainder on probation.
Marcee Gray has reportedly expressed regret to the families of the victims impacted by the school shooting. According to the Washington Post, Marcee Gray claimed she informed the school about an “extreme emergency” on the morning of the shooting, stating that officials needed to locate her son.
