John Aprea, famous for his roles in ‘The Godfather Part II’ and ‘Full House’, has passed away at 83
Actor John Aprea, recognized for his roles in “The Godfather Part II” and “Full House,” has sadly passed away at the age of 83.
Aprea died on August 5 in Los Angeles due to natural causes, as confirmed by his manager Will Levine in a statement to YSL News on Sunday.
Born in New Jersey to Italian immigrants, Aprea made his acting debut in the 1968 crime film “Bullitt,” featuring stars like Steve McQueen, Jacqueline Bisset, and Robert Vaughn. Over the early ‘70s, he continued to appear in various films and television shows, including “The Grasshopper” and “The Dark Side of Tomorrow.”
Aprea joined the cast of “The Godfather” series in 1974 with a role in “The Godfather Part II,” the sequel to Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 crime saga featuring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, and James Caan. Aprea played a younger version of Sal Tessio, a character originally portrayed by Abe Vigoda.
After securing his role, Aprea reached out to Vigoda for tips on portraying the character, to which Vigoda replied, “I don’t know what I did. Just have a good time, kid.”
“The Godfather Part II” was a box office hit, earning $47.8 million and winning an impressive six Oscars at the 1975 Academy Awards, including best picture.
Following his success in the “Godfather” series, Aprea starred in various TV shows and films, including the family comedy “The Montefuscos” (1975) and the biopic “The Idolmaker” (1980) about Bob Marcucci.
Aprea is also well-remembered for his role as grandpa Nick Katsopolis on the sitcom “Full House,” where he played the father of Jesse Katsopolis, portrayed by John Stamos, during several episodes from 1988 to 1991.
He reprised his role on the show’s Netflix reboot, “Fuller House,” in 2017.
Most recently, Aprea played Jack Madison in the Peacock soap opera “The Bay,” a role he held from 2020 to 2023.
He is survived by his longtime wife Betsy Graci, their daughter Nicole, and his stepchildren Marika Parker and Valentino Graci.
