Melania Trump opts out of White House invitation. No meeting with Jill Biden
WASHINGTON − In simple terms, Melania Trump has declined an invitation from the Bidens.
The invitation came shortly after Donald Trump’s clear election win over Vice President Kamala Harris last week, prompting the Bidens to extend an invitation for the Trumps to visit the White House.
While Trump accepted President Joe Biden’s invitation to meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Melania’s decision to decline became public only a few hours before the meeting.
For Melania, it’s a firm “no.”
“She is pleased about her husband’s return to the Oval Office and wishes him all the best,” her office stated via X.
“Former First Lady Mrs. Trump will not be present at today’s meeting at the White House,” the statement confirmed.
The statement also took aim at the media for relying on “unnamed sources” to spread “false, misleading, and inaccurate information.”
“Make sure you choose your news sources wisely,” the statement continued.
On the day of the meeting, the First Lady welcomed Trump upon his arrival at the White House.
“She presented Mr. Trump with a handwritten letter of congratulations for Mrs. Trump and highlighted that her team is ready to assist with the transition,” according to the White House.
Traditionally, the first lady hosts tea for her successor. In 2016, Michelle Obama welcomed Melania Trump with a tea and a tour in the Yellow Oval Room in the White House.
When Joe Biden was inaugurated in 2020, the Trumps did not host the Bidens, nor did they attend the inauguration, following the events of January 6 and Trump’s unfounded claims about the election’s legitimacy.
