Missing Woman, Found Alive After 4 Days on Hiking Trip in Colorado
A hiker who embarked on a solo hiking expedition from a spiritual retreat was located safe on Saturday, as confirmed by officials in southwest Colorado.
Gina Chase, 53, from Victoria, Canada, was found in the designated search area on Saturday, four days after she began her solo hike near Lone Cone, Colorado, roughly 60 miles southwest of Telluride, according to the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office.
“This is exactly the outcome we all hoped for, and we are overjoyed for Ms. Chase and her family,” San Miguel County Sheriff Bill Masters stated. “The success of this operation showcases the determination and dedication of our responders.”
Chase had been part of a group during the retreat but left for her “solo journey” at around 11 a.m. Wednesday. Sheriff Masters noted that participants were discouraged from carrying cell phones on their solo hikes. Additionally, they engaged in fasting “to enhance their connection with nature” before going on their individual quests.
She was reported missing early Thursday afternoon when her group leader realized she had not returned to the campsite and could not be found.
“It’s always wise to have communication technology on hand,” Masters said. “Additionally, you shouldn’t starve yourself, even if a guiding service suggests ignoring basic safety protocols. Nature doesn’t prioritize your safety and can be deadly, especially if [you] aren’t adequately prepared.”

The Animas Valley Institute, located in Durango, Colorado, organized the event.
This organization was established in 1980 and promotes a variety of guided experiences related to nature and self-discovery, such as Soulcraft intensives, modern vision quests, and nature-based training programs for soul guides on its website.
