Olivia Munn Introduces Surprise Drug Tests for John Mulaney During Pregnancy

Olivia Munn Initiated Random Drug Tests for John Mulaney During Her First Pregnancy

As a proud father of two, John Mulaney is committed to staying sober, supported by his wife, Olivia Munn.

In a recent GQ cover story for Men of the Year, Mulaney, 42, and Munn discussed their family life and how Mulaney has reached a point where he describes himself as “having the best time in life.”

Mulaney’s well-known intervention, featuring friends like Fred Armisen, Nick Kroll, Natasha Lyonne, and Seth Meyers, has become a part of pop culture history. In the GQ article, Munn revealed her pivotal role in assisting Mulaney’s path to sobriety.

When she was six months pregnant with their son, Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney, who is now nearly three, Munn organized an intervention. They agreed that she would conduct random drug screenings — a practice that continues to help Mulaney feel secure.

“It’s like a relief,” Mulaney shared. “I like that this isn’t something she or anyone else needs to question. There’s something reassuring about peeing in that cup that confirms I’m on the right track. It gives me confidence.”

Mulaney’s journey included a rehab stint from December 2020 to February 2021, largely influenced by the intervention from his friends due to his addiction to substances like cocaine, Adderall, Xanax, Klonopin, and Percocet. Next month marks four years of sobriety for the Emmy-winning comedian known for “Baby J,” and he has now been sought out to help others with their interventions.

“It felt like watching someone caught in a tsunami,” Munn described Mulaney’s recovery journey. “I saw someone newly sober on the brink, and I wasn’t sure how to help him because I barely knew him.”

“I was anxious about what was happening with him. It felt unstable,” she added. “But then seeing him perform at the Troubadour, I thought, ‘Wow, he’s incredible. He’s got it together.'”

The anticipated arrival of their son brought joy to Mulaney during those challenging times, according to Munn: “That was the one thing keeping him feeling positive. He was excited to share the news with his parents.”

Olivia Munn ‘Barely Knew’ John Mulaney When Expecting Their First Child

Years after first meeting at Seth Meyers’ wedding in 2013, Munn and Mulaney reconnected in 2021 when Mulaney was searching for housing in New York after his rehabilitation.

“It wasn’t exactly ‘dating,'” Munn recounted to GQ. “I hardly knew him at that time.”

Upon learning of Munn’s pregnancy, she believed they would simply co-parent: “It wasn’t like ‘We’re getting married and living together,’ but rather ‘I’ll be involved in some manner,'” she explained. Two months prior to Malcolm’s birth, they decided to parent him together.

The couple reportedly had a wedding in July and recently welcomed their daughter, Méi June Mulaney, via surrogate on September 14. Munn has shared her journey regarding a private battle with breast cancer this year, which began when she received a high lifetime risk score and was later confirmed by an MRI and biopsy.

Munn underwent a double mastectomy and a hysterectomy as part of her treatment.

Mulaney’s upcoming projects include a five-week run of the Broadway show “All In: Comedy About Love” this December, followed by a live Netflix special building on the summer talk show he hosted, “Everybody’s in L.A.” He was also approached twice to host “The Daily Show” and received an offer to host next year’s Academy Awards, according to GQ.
