The Lifespan of Betta Fish: How Care Choices Can Enhance Their Longevity

What is the lifespan of betta fish? How proper care can extend their life

Betta fish, also called Siamese fighting fish, are among “the most beloved freshwater aquarium species globally,” according to PetMD. This species, originally from Southeast Asia, displays a variety of brilliant colors, and there are over 70 distinct types of bettas.

These freshwater fish are popular pets largely due to their straightforward care needs. With the right treatment, betta fish can have a healthy lifespan.

So, how long can you expect a betta fish to live?

What is a betta fish’s lifespan?

In a controlled environment, betta fish usually live for two to five years, states Adelphi University.

However, some betta fish can surpass this average. As noted by PetMD, with optimal care, these fish can live between five to seven years. A select few may even reach up to 10 years, according to Spruce Pets.

The lifespan of a betta fish is influenced by the care it receives, as reported by WebMD. They are more likely to live longer if kept in a clean tank, a calm environment, and a healthy diet.

Feeding your betta fish

According to Aquatic Veterinary Services, you should feed your betta fish at least twice a day. It’s best to space these meals six to eight hours apart.

Since bettas are carnivorous by nature, they require a protein-rich diet. PetMD suggests using fish pellets instead of flakes for their meals.

The feeding routine for a betta fish will also depend on the temperature of their habitat. The water temperature should ideally be between 78 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit, according to Aquatic Veterinary Services. Temperature fluctuations can lead to various health issues for your betta fish.

Do betta fish sleep?

Like all fish, betta fish do have a sleep cycle, but it’s not quite like that of mammals.

Fish rest by reducing their activity levels and metabolic rate, as stated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Another point of difference is that fish sleep with their eyes open, as they lack eyelids, according to Aqueon. This means a betta fish can seem fully alert even when it is resting.
