Rapper Yak Gotti Stabbed in Jail Following Indictment with Young Thug
Yak Gotti, a rapper facing trial in a high-profile case linked to Young Thug’s alleged street gang, was reported stabbed in jail on Sunday, as confirmed by both authorities and his legal representative.
Gotti, whose legal name is Deamonte Kendrick, is among two defendants still awaiting a decision after being charged alongside Young Thug in 2022 on numerous offenses including gang activity, murder, drug, and firearm charges.
“Kendrick received minor treatment for injuries from a sharp object at the Fulton County Jail,” stated Natalie Ammons, communications director for the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, in an email to YSL News on Monday. She also confirmed that Kendrick was scheduled to appear in court Monday and that an investigation was ongoing.
“The stabbing occurred at the South Annex in Union City where both individuals were held,” Ammons wrote. The identity of the attacker remains unknown.
“I talked to Deamonte last night; he sounded a bit fatigued but I’m hopeful for his full recovery,” Kendrick’s attorney Doug Weinstein posted on X Monday morning. “I plan to see him in court today, and I will learn more then. Please keep Deamonte and everyone at Fulton County jails in your thoughts.”
Gotti’s stabbing is the latest event in an extensive trial, which already included discussions on the admissibility of rap lyrics as evidence and attorneys being arrested.
Shannon Stillwell, who is also on trial with Kendrick, was previously stabbed in an incident in 2023. They are the last two defendants in a case naming 28 co-conspirators concerning violations of Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO).
The same law was used to charge President-elect Donald Trump in Georgia for attempting to manipulate the state’s electoral votes. This law facilitates prosecutors in linking various crimes and defendants to illustrate a conspiracy.
The overarching case against YSL, purportedly a violent street gang, is noted as the longest criminal trial in Georgia’s history. Young Thug has been accused of founding YSL and engaging in violent activities while using his music for promotion. However, the defense argues that YSL refers to “Young Stoner Life,” a record label.
Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Lamar Williams, pled guilty in October but received probation instead of prison time. Many other defendants have accepted plea agreements, unlike Stillwell and Kendrick.
Jury considerations for both Kendrick and Stillwell will continue on Monday as Georgia courts prepare to conclude this lengthy legal saga.
