In 2024’s Spotify Wrapped, a key trend emerges: Female narrators take the spotlight
As social media blurs the lines between those who create content and those who consume it, allowing celebrities and influencers to engage directly with their fans, Spotify remains a distinct player. Through its year-end summary known as Spotify Wrapped, the platform has refined the role of a middleman.
Each year, Spotify offers a distinct user experience with this eagerly awaited event, keeping the release date under wraps. Wrapped was unveiled on Wednesday, but YSL News was fortunate to preview the report a day earlier, gaining insights from a long-time team member.
Spotify, known for its signature green logo, went all out for this annual occasion, featuring lattes with the Spotify emblem in the foam, perfumers to design scents tailored to individual music tastes, and even personalized manicures.
While Wrapped always makes a splash, for Sulinna Ong, the Global Head of Editorial at Spotify and a decade-long contributor to the project, this year stands out for a significant reason.
Women dominate the Spotify Wrapped Global charts
This year, eight out of the top ten most-streamed albums worldwide featured female artists. From Karol G to Sabrina Carpenter, audiences gravitated towards women vocalists.
“2024 has truly been a fantastic year for women in music,” Ong stated. However, the trend isn’t limited to high-profile artists like Carpenter or Billie Eilish. Ong highlights emerging hip-hop talents like Doechii and innovative indie bands such as “The Last Dinner Party” and “Lovecat.”
A strong overarching theme is evident among the leading artists, Ong observes. Though each artist’s music shines individually, there are significant motifs that draw fans back.
Sabrina Carpenter, for instance, channels classic ’60s pin-up glamour and infuses her songs with captivating sensuality. Charli XCX’s album “Brat,” which defined the summer, embraces the aesthetics and sounds of 2000s grunge and exuberant club culture.
“What strikes me about the artists who are resonating and achieving success is their ability to create immersive worlds that draw in their audience,” Ong explains.
“Music often acts as a reflection of what’s occurring in the world,” she adds, noting the rising noise and demands of society today, resulting in a shared yearning for escapism.
“Whether it’s entering Charli’s universe or Chappell’s, this aspect of an immersive experience plays a crucial role in how fans connect,” Ong clarifies.
Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, and Chappell Roan: A powerful trio
Ong identifies Charli XCX, Sabrina Carpenter, and Chappell Roan as the “trifecta” driving the female-centric trend, having all released new albums this year. Their “personality-driven female pop” helps listeners find relatable or aspirational stories while fostering a connection with the artists.
“These three women share a history of writing, producing, and making music for years their success, although it may seem sudden, is actually the product of years of hard work and audience cultivation,” Ong notes.
Although their fan bases may overlap, each artist in this “trifecta” showcases a unique style. Charli, in particular, reveals a deep desire for artists who embrace the complexities of life, Ong points out.
“Brat” conveyed that embracing life’s messiness and having fun without aiming for perfection is completely acceptable,” she concluded.
Taylor Swift: Now, Forever, and Always
Despite the influx of both fresh faces and returning artists, one thing remains unchanged: Taylor Swift continues to be an unstoppable force in music.
Swift has not only topped charts as the most-streamed artist worldwide and in the U.S. but her newest album “THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT: THE ANTHOLOGY” also leads both global and U.S. streaming lists.
“She is a powerhouse on her own,” says Ong. “The Eras Tour is phenomenal.” Performing a three-hour concert that showcases different phases of her career and hits back-to-back while in her early 30s is truly impressive, she notes.
Ong adds that Swift’s ability to stay “unapologetically herself” and her pride in her predominantly female fanbase has fueled her success. An artist who resonates with themes of heartbreak, struggle, and the constant juggle of life as a woman in America is invaluable.
Last year, Swift was also recognized as the most-listened-to artist, previously ranking No. 2 two years ago behind Bad Bunny.
