Alex Bregman’s Potential Return to the Astros: Exploring the Best Fits Amid Arenado Rumors

Could Alex Bregman Return to the Astros After Arenado Declines? Top Teams in Play for the Star

As Christmas approaches, All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman is still without a contract, making him one of the best position players available in Major League Baseball free agency.

The 31-year-old has made the postseason during each of his eight full seasons with the Houston Astros, celebrating World Series victories in both 2017 and 2022. He won a Gold Glove in 2024 and has expressed openness to transitioning to second base with a new team, although he is coming off a disappointing season marked by a career-low .768 OPS.

Bregman is expected to secure a contract worth between $150 million and $200 million, making a potential return to the Astros likely—especially after Nolan Arenado of the St. Louis Cardinals blocked a trade to Houston with his no-trade clause.

Teams reportedly showing interest in Bregman include the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and New York Mets.

Here’s an overview of some potential teams for Bregman and the reasoning behind each situation:

Houston Astros

The Astros recently acquired Isaac Paredes and third-base prospect Cam Smith from the Cubs in a deal involving Kyle Tucker, which may suggest they are planning for life without Bregman. However, this doesn’t rule out the chance for a reunion. Houston attempted to negotiate a trade for Arenado from the Cardinals, but the deal fell through due to Arenado’s no-trade clause, indicating that the team is not entirely content with Paredes as their starting third baseman heading into spring training.

New York Yankees

Following their near miss on Juan Soto, the Yankees have been aggressive, landing Max Fried on a $218 million deal and acquiring All-Star closer Devin Williams along with former MVP Cody Bellinger. A few days back, they seemed to be a strong contender for signing Bregman, but their recent roster moves and increased salary obligations have complicated the situation.

Boston Red Sox

Red Sox executive Craig Breslow has firmly stated that Rafael Devers will remain at third base, meaning Bregman would need to shift to second base—a transition his agent, Scott Boras, has indicated would be acceptable. Having posted a 1.240 OPS in 80 career at-bats at Fenway Park, Bregman could significantly enhance the Red Sox’s lefty-heavy lineup and bolster infield defense, even while adapting to a new position.

Detroit Tigers

Given Bregman’s long-standing connection with Tigers manager A.J. Hinch, who coached him from 2016 to 2019, this connection may play a role in Bregman’s future. The Tigers are coming off their first postseason berth in a decade, with Jace Jung tentatively set to be the third baseman. Jung had a mixed debut last season, boasting a .362 OBP but failing to hit a home run over 79 at-bats.

New York Mets

After investing $765 million in Juan Soto, the Mets might still consider bringing Bregman on board to play third base, potentially shifting Mark Vientos to first base or designated hitter. However, with both players expected to command contracts in the $150-200 million range, the Mets may prefer to retain Pete Alonso over pursuing Bregman.

Toronto Blue Jays

For the second consecutive winter, the Blue Jays have missed out on obtaining a $700 million free agent. Will anyone finally take their money?

Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies have yet to make significant moves this winter but could still pair a Bregman signing with a trade of Alec Bohm.
