Behind the Scenes: Taylor’s Decision to Keep Her Mother’s Identity Hidden on ‘Love is Blind’

‘Awkward comments’: Why ‘Love is Blind’ contestant Taylor kept her mother’s name a secret

Warning: The following contains spoilers from the first six episodes of the seventh season of Netflix’s “Love is Blind” (currently available for streaming).

In “Love is Blind,” the aim is to find love without seeing each other, and contestant Taylor Krause fully embraced this idea.

During the premiere episode (now streaming on Netflix), the 30-year-old clean energy policy consultant prompted curiosity from her romantic partner when she chose not to share her mother’s name while they conversed through a wall. She explained to 33-year-old quantum physicist Garrett Josemans, “My mom’s first name, I think, gives away a bit of how I look, particularly my ethnicity.”

Garrett, who mentioned he has only dated white women, noted, “You seem very deliberate in what you share, and while I admire that, it also raises the question: ‘What is she hiding?'”

In response, Taylor clarified, “The reason I preferred not to disclose my ethnicity was to ensure that he wouldn’t have any preconceived notions about my appearance. I really wanted to explore if my emotional and intellectual perspectives were enough, and everything else is secondary.”

This conversation was one of several that touched on issues concerning racial identity among the 29 singles in the Washington, D.C., area participating in this season.

Taylor hears ‘awkward’ remarks about how ‘men perceive my ethnicity’

Even though the reality show may not have a perfect setup, it’s quite common for participants to share some information about their appearances while trying to connect “blindly.”

For example, cast member Tyler Francis mentioned to YSL News that the only feature he shared with fiancée Ashley Adionser was that he has freckles, while others, like Nick Dorka and Hannah Jiles, are more forthcoming in describing their looks. (Nick humorously referred to himself as “a less buff version” of Henry Cavill, known as Superman, in the first episode.)

Meanwhile, due to “awkward remarks” she has received in the past regarding how men view her ethnicity, Taylor aimed to remain consistent with the “Love is Blind” philosophy.

“I’m a proud Asian woman, and my ethnicity does play a role in my appearance. So entering a show centered around love rather than looks, I wanted to honor that intent,” Taylor shared in an interview before the Season 7 launch. “I preferred to keep that out of consideration.”

The reveal of Taylor and Garrett’s ‘Love is Blind’ connection

Taylor shared that her mother, Fong, who has been married to Taylor’s dad Tom for 35 years, is “a mix of an angel and a gangster.” She mentioned that it’s common for people to affectionately call her by her first name because it’s so wonderful.

“I realized that if this relationship goes far, (Garrett) would eventually meet Fong. We could enjoy dim sum together and observe our Chinese traditions,” she expressed. “But for the purpose of the discussions in the pods, I wanted to hold back that information.”

This season also delves into candid discussions about multiracial dating, political views, and body image concerns. (One man in the pods even confessed he regretted voting for former president Donald Trump.)

Thus, on “Love is Blind,” participants frequently share insights about their identities as they engage with their chosen partners over 10 days in the pods.

As noted by sociology professor Danielle J. Lindemann from Lehigh University in a CNN article about the show in 2020, contestants face challenges related to non-visual cues regarding race on the popular reality series.

Despite the initial awkwardness in the pods, Taylor and Garrett’s first real encounter was smooth and heartwarming in Episode 3. The moment the doors opened, they approached each other on a red rug, warmly embracing and sharing a kiss.

“Fong is going to have the best FaceTime ever,” Taylor quipped to Garrett.

Episodes 7-9 of “Love is Blind” will be available for streaming on Netflix starting October 9.
