Billie Eilish returns for her eighth Vanity Fair time capsule
Billie is back again.
For the eighth consecutive year, Billie Eilish participated in a recorded interview with Vanity Fair. This annual time-lapse project happens every October 18, during which the pop sensation discusses her career, style, and personal life.
The video opens with a side-by-side visual of the “Birds of a Feather” vocalist, showcasing her evolving hair colors from blue to green to red, and back to black, while highlighting her rapidly increasing social media following.
In this year’s dialogue, Billie reflected on her Oscar win for “What Was I Made For?” from the “Barbie” movie soundtrack, her growing circle of friends, and her journey of self-trust.
Eilish shares thoughts on relationships, intimacy, and self-worth
<p”I’ve had a year brimming with friendship,” she shared, mentioning how she has nurtured existing relationships while also forming new ones and rekindling lost connections.
“Yes, I’ve enjoyed some great sex,” she playfully replied to a wish made in her previous year’s interview, adding, “so you’re welcome Billie.”
In a nod to her past self, she expressed a desire to maintain her sparkle and not allow anyone to diminish it.
“Falling in love or dating someone can be daunting,” she commented. “You often find yourself obscured by the haze of passion and admiration.”
“I have full faith in myself,” she stated confidently. “I won’t allow those feelings to overpower me again.”
A blockbuster year
Reflecting on her latest album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” she said, “It was quite a challenging process.” The album has achieved tremendous success, earning Billie seven Grammy nominations, and ranking as the sixth most-streamed album in the U.S. this past year, with one of its standout tracks also hitting the list of most-heard songs.
“I believe it’s the finest work Finneas and I have ever produced,” Eilish conveyed to Vanity Fair. Finneas, her brother and collaborator, is a musician in his own right.
In the previous year’s video, she accurately predicted “Lunch” and “Birds of a Feather” as potential hits from her upcoming album, which turned out to be correct. “Birds of a Feather” soared in popularity, accumulating billions of streams and becoming the album’s standout track.
Additionally, Eilish was awarded the title of Apple Music’s Artist of the Year for 2024, having previously won the honor in 2019.
Billie Eilish laughs off previous collaboration frustrations: ‘I mean, it’s Charli though’
Billie also laughed when shown clips of her expressing the challenges of collaborating with other musicians.
“Well, it’s Charli!” she remarked when reminded of her recent feature in Charli XCX’s song “Guess.” This track is part of the extended version of Charli’s trending “Brat” album and was released in August.
The collaboration experience turned out to be a “dream,” she indicated. The project began when Finneas attended a Charli XCX concert, leading to them writing lyrics together, and shortly after, Billie joined Charli for the video shoot, culminating in the song’s rapid release.
“Charli and I executed this collaboration perfectly, just as I envisioned,” she said.
Change and continuity
The interview format remained largely unchanged, with Billie revealing her favorite film (“Fruitvale Station”) and the artist currently on her playlist (Lady Gaga).
The segment concludes with a heartwarming moment featuring her mom, who pops into frame for a hug and reflects on how much has transformed since their first interview.
When Vanity Fair first began recording Billie in 2017, neither party anticipated the heights of her fame. This ongoing project gives a unique glimpse into the life of one of music’s more mysterious young talents as she transitions into adulthood and learns to embrace herself (and her art) along the way.
“See you next time, and the time after that, and the time after that, until I become an old lady,” Billie quipped.
