Colin Jost surprises Scarlett Johansson on ‘SNL’ with a ‘joke swap’: ‘Oh, my God!’
It’s the most unpredictable time of the year for “Saturday Night Live.”
During the last episode of 2024, “Weekend Update” hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che once again engaged in their biannual “joke swap,” where they read jokes that the other one has supposedly never seen before. These jokes are often shockingly inappropriate, which makes them reluctant to share them on air.
This time, however, there was an unexpected element: Jost’s wife, Scarlett Johansson, was present after participating in a sketch about the show’s five-time hosts. The producers had set up a camera to capture her reactions, and Jost remarked that she appeared “genuinely concerned.”
To start, Jost read a joke about leaving his wife since she just turned 40 last month.
“I want to dedicate this next joke to my love, Scarlett Johansson,” he announced. “Hey, boo. You all know Scarlett just turned 40, which means I might be on my way out!”
Jost quickly added, “Just kidding! We have a child together, and you haven’t seen any pictures of him yet because he’s very dark-skinned.”
The “Black Widow” actress watched with a drink in hand as a digitally altered photo of her and Jost with a Black child appeared on screen, prompting Johansson to curse and shake her head in disbelief.
But Che had more surprises in store, presenting Jost with another shocking joke involving his wife and a Costco sandwich, which was too vulgar to share here.
Johansson appeared visibly taken aback after the segment, exclaiming, “Oh, my God!”
In return, Jost forced Che to read some highly controversial jokes, including one about Jay-Z being accused of wrongdoing involving a 13-year-old girl, allegations that Jay-Z has firmly denied, claiming the lawyer behind the accusations is attempting to blackmail him.
“Jay-Z is innocent,” Che read. “He wasn’t even present at those parties, and I know because I was there! And Diddy, if you’re tuning in, we’re bad boys for life.”
Che also had to read a joke about “Moana 2” being a box-office success, “because like my buddy Jeffrey Epstein used to say, there’s nothing better than an island adventure with a teenage girl.”
During the news section of “Weekend Update,” Jost was shocked when the audience cheered for Luigi Mangione, the man accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
“Yeah, definitely woo,” he said sarcastically to the crowd. “You’re cheering for justice, right?”
Tom Hanks, Emma Stone, John Mulaney, and others welcome Martin Short into the ‘SNL’ five-timers club
The cold open of this episode surprised fans with one of the most star-studded sketches ever.
This Saturday’s episode kicked off with a roster of celebrities ushering host Martin Short into the exclusive five-timers club, which consists of those who have hosted the show five times.
Tom Hanks initiated the sketch by explaining his creation of this “exclusive” club as a “brilliantly lazy way to avoid writing a monologue.” He was joined by Paul Rudd, who introduced Short to the secret handshake, and Tina Fey, who joked that Short is “one of the most common things in Hollywood: a loud man.”
Alec Baldwin, who has hosted 17 times, entered and mentioned that he portrays Republicans on the show due to his “strong daddy vibes.” Shortly after, Johansson appeared and humorously closed the door in Jost’s face, followed by Kristen Wiig, who arrived in a bathrobe, joking she is definitely “not here permanently,” and Emma Stone and Melissa McCarthy, the latter of whom executed some slapstick humor by crashing through a wall.
Then John Mulaney dropped by, joking that the sitcom they starred in together, “Mulaney,” couldn’t air now because “it wasn’t good, and no one liked it!” The last cameo came from Jimmy Fallon, who announced he had to leave shortly.
go “host another game show and chuckle at my own humor.”
Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, and more celebrities feature in final ‘SNL’ episode of 2024
During their time in the studio, several stars who participated in the cameo-heavy cold open stayed for additional sketches.
In one sketch where two men argue about a parking space on Christmas Eve, McCarthy appeared as an assertive woman who splashes her drink onto a car window.
In another segment showcasing various airport goers in a parade, Wiig portrayed a woman who mistakenly sat on a rolling suitcase, while Rudd took on the role of himself, facing rejection at a lounge entrance. McCarthy returned as a gate agent struggling to pronounce names, and Hanks portrayed Sully Sullenberger, the pilot famous for landing a plane on the Hudson River after encountering a bird strike. Hanks previously played Sullenberger in the film “Sully.”
Furthermore, Rudd had a significant part in a “Sábado Gigante” sketch, where he played a bewildered man pulled from the audience, clueless about the format of the Spanish-language show. Dana Carvey made a surprise appearance, giving Rudd’s character an entirely useless tip.
“SNL” will be back in 2025, and the special for the show’s 50th anniversary is scheduled to air on February 16.
