Today’s Bowl Game Schedule: Key Details for College Football Bowl Games on December 23
The eight teams that have advanced to the College Football Playoff quarterfinals are now confirmed. However, we’ll have to wait just over a week to narrow that number down to four. Don’t worry, college football enthusiasts, as there are plenty of exciting bowl games coming up to keep everyone entertained!
On Monday, two afternoon bowl games will take place, perfect for those needing a break from holiday shopping or preparations. Interestingly, both games will be held at stadiums featuring uniquely colored playing surfaces—so don’t be alarmed by what you see on your screens!
Today’s game lineup is as follows:
Myrtle Beach Bowl – Coastal Carolina vs. Texas-San Antonio
Time/TV/location: 11 a.m. ET, ESPN, Conway, S.C.
Why watch: This season has not been one of the Chanticleers’ best, but they are eager for the chance to play another game on their distinctive teal field. The Roadrunners had a challenging start but improved, winning three out of their last four games. Coastal Carolina will see freshman QB Tad Hudson making his debut because of player departures, while Texas-San Antonio will retain QB Owen McCown, who is hopeful to have RB Robert Henry back from injury.
Why it could disappoint: There’s a chance that Coastal Carolina’s young players will find ways to score against a Texas-San Antonio defense that has shown vulnerabilities. If that happens, the game could be quite entertaining, but it’s more probable that Coastal Carolina will spend much of the game trying to catch up.
Idaho Potato Bowl – Fresno State vs. Northern Illinois
Time/TV/location: 2:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, Boise, Idaho.
Why watch: The second game of this Monday doubleheader features two teams facing significant roster uncertainties. Northern Illinois surprised many early in the season by upsetting Notre Dame but ended up in the middle of the pack in the MAC. Meanwhile, Fresno State achieved a .500 season under interim coach Tim Skipper, with Matt Entz, an assistant from USC, set to take over. With numerous QB departures, both teams will likely rely heavily on their running games. Northern Illinois RB Gavin Williams has stepped in well for the injured Antario Brown, while Fresno State will lean on RB duo Elijah Gilliam and Bryson Donelson.
Why it could disappoint: Despite facing player departures, both teams’ defenses have historically been their stronger aspect, which could lead to a game dominated by punting. However, this could set the stage for some tense moments in the final minutes, making it still worth tuning in.
