Angus MacInnes, original ‘Star Wars’ actor, passes away at 77: ‘A true legend has been lost’
Angus MacInnes, famed for his small yet impactful role as Gold Leader in the iconic original “Star Wars” film, has died at the age of 77.
The news of MacInnes’ passing was made official by his family in a statement provided to YSL News on Tuesday.
“Our hearts are shattered,” the family stated. “He was at home, enveloped in love, and we received overwhelming support. We appreciate every heartfelt tribute.”
His long-term manager, Suzann Wade, shared, “Even in his final month, he displayed remarkable strength, showcasing the same humor that could brighten even the darkest days.”
“I will forever treasure his mischievous laugh and his remarkable gifts as an actor,” Wade reflected. “We have truly lost a legend. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.”
In the 1977 blockbuster “Star Wars,” MacInnes portrayed Jon “Dutch” Vander, a pilot who commanded the Gold Squadron during the legendary attack on the Death Star at the film’s climax, where his character ultimately perishes.
Years later, he reprised his role in the 2016 prequel “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” where Gold Leader participated in the climactic battle while the rebels attempted to obtain the plans for the Death Star. While the film incorporated old footage of MacInnes, he also contributed a new voiceover.
“They inquired if I was interested, offered a significant sum, and after taking the money, I recorded the dialogue again,” he shared with Inverse in 2017. “It was a rather strange experience. Unfortunately, after Carrie (Fisher’s) passing, I’m the only actor ‘brought back’ in ‘Rogue One’ who is still living.”
MacInnes also played Judge Silver in the 1995 film “Judge Dredd” alongside Sylvester Stallone. His filmography includes appearances in “Hellboy,” “Captain Phillips,” “Eyes Wide Shut,” and “Superman II.”
A post shared on Monday on MacInnes’ Facebook page, signed by his family, noted that “Star Wars” fans held a “special place in his heart.”
“He cherished interacting with you at conventions, listening to your stories, and sharing in your enthusiasm for the saga,” the post stated. “He was always humbled and honored by the admiration he received from fans and the convention community.”
“Angus was more than just an actor — he was a compassionate, thoughtful, and generous person who brought joy and humor to the lives of everyone around him. He will be profoundly missed by his loved ones, friends, fellow actors, and admirers worldwide — his family is grateful to all of you.”
