Former NFL Running Back Cierre Wood Receives Life Sentence for Murder and Child Abuse Charges

Cierre Wood, former NFL running back, sentenced to life in prison for murder and child abuse

Cierre Wood, a former running back in both the NFL and Canadian Football League, received a life sentence on Tuesday after he agreed to a plea deal concerning the death of his girlfriend’s 5-year-old daughter in April 2019 at his Las Vegas residence.

The Associated Press reported that Wood, aged 33, was sentenced to life in prison but has the option of parole after serving 10 years. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and felony child abuse in April. Judge Jacqueline Bluth from the Clark County District Court also mandated that he must serve an additional 28 months to six years for the felony child abuse charge, to be served consecutively.

The little girl, La’Rayah Davis, was discovered dead in Wood’s apartment on April 9, 2019, shortly after she and her mother, Amy Taylor, had moved in with him. In June 2019, both Wood and Taylor were charged with murder and multiple counts of felony child abuse.

During the investigation, both Wood and Taylor confessed to using physical exercise and discipline as punishment methods. An autopsy identified that Davis had sustained 20 newly fractured ribs, internal bleeding, a lacerated liver, and bruises on her heart, diaphragm, and connective tissue.

As part of his plea deal, prosecutors dropped the other felony child abuse charges against Wood, according to the Associated Press. Wood entered an Alford plea, which allows him to maintain his innocence while admitting that a guilty plea is in his best interest.

The Associated Press also reported that Taylor pled guilty earlier this year to second-degree murder and child abuse as part of her own plea deal with prosecutors.

Wood played for the Houston Texans, New England Patriots, and Buffalo Bills in the NFL between 2013 and 2015. He also attended the University of Notre Dame. Following his NFL career, he had a short spell with the Montreal Alouettes in Canada.
