Gen Z Democrats Find Humor in the AI Antics Involving Donald Trump and Taylor Swift

‘He’s just an old guy’: Gen Z Democrats chuckle over Trump-Taylor Swift AI incident

CHICAGO – Donald Trump, the former President, stirred up attention on Sunday by sharing fake images on his Truth Social account that misleadingly implied he had the backing of the globally renowned artist, Taylor Swift.

Young Democrats from Generation Z, gathered at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Monday, responded with humor and irony, while expressing unease about the dangers of artificial intelligence.

Taylor Swift publicly supported Biden during the 2020 election and has encouraged her fans to register to vote, leading to significant increases in voter registrations nationwide. However, she has remained neutral in the current presidential contest.

Maya Luna, a 20-year-old from Connecticut who is involved in youth voter outreach, joked that the whole situation illustrates that Trump is a “lying a–hole.”

“His campaign is crumbling, and he can’t attack Kamala without appearing either racist or sexist, so this is what he resorts to,” she commented.

Luna, part of the Gen Z group Progress Libs, believes that Swift endorsing any candidate wouldn’t significantly impact the presidential race; her group has already noticed a strong wave of support for the new Harris-Walz ticket.

The fact that Trump’s campaign may have confused AI for actual endorsements makes it “even more humorous,” according to Luna.

“While I don’t want to empathize with Trump at all. there’s a possibility he’s just, like, an old guy who thought it was genuine.”

Anica Czander, 28, is concerned about the broader implications of this event.

“We are well overdue for some regulations on AI,” Czander stated. “I worry about those who might take this kind of misinformation seriously. We need measures to protect individuals who might struggle to discern such content.”

“This could be a great opportunity to incorporate this issue into important political discussions,” she suggested, highlighting that Swift is “known for her legal actions.”

The misleading image depicted Swift in an Uncle Sam outfit with the caption, ‘Taylor wants you to vote for Donald Trump.’ Trump, in response, shared the image with the caption “I accept.”

Swift has yet to comment on the fabricated image. Meanwhile, Trump’s campaign has stood firm, with Communications Director Steven Cheung stating that many Swift fans support the former Republican candidate.

“Swifties for Trump is a huge movement that’s growing every day. Kamala Harris is guilty as charged for all the pain she’s caused every American,” the statement declared.

While two images showcasing a Trump supporter wearing a “Swifties for Trump” shirt were genuine, many others were AI-created, according to CNN.

Jenna Knupple, 26, expressed concern that Swift’s endorsement could sway young voters significantly due to her wide influence. Many youth may prioritize celebrity opinions over real issues, which she finds troubling if they mistakenly believe that Trump has Swift’s endorsement.

“If you trust that this is real, you might jump on the bandwagon just because your favorite artist supports it. So it could definitely have an impact,” Knupple said. “We know Swifties often take action based on Taylor’s statements.”

“I find it amusing because it seems so true,” Elisa Calderon, 24, concurred in a different interview. “If Taylor were to endorse Harris, it would significantly influence young voters.”

Tyler Sykes, 19, mentioned that, besides Swift, he could envision another major celebrity, Beyonce, having a similar effect on young voters.

Though Beyonce has not declared her support for any candidate yet, she allowed Harris to use her song “Freedom” in her campaign, leading to speculation about a possible endorsement.

Sykes stated that while neither celebrity’s endorsement would determine his vote, it might influence his decision if he were undecided about his choice.

He expressed excitement about casting his first presidential vote for Harris, emphasizing its historic importance.

“It’s thrilling, and the opportunity to possibly have the first female president is incredibly significant for my first time voting in a presidential election,” he remarked.
