Idaho Wildfires Consume Almost 500,000 Acres

In Idaho, wildfires have scorched nearly half a million acres of land, affecting vast stretches of national forest.

As of Saturday, over a dozen wildfires are raging throughout the mountainous region, as reported by the National Interagency Fire Center. Close to Boise, multiple blazes in the Boise National Forest have consumed over 350,000 acres. Local air quality has plummeted to “very unhealthy” levels, as indicated by the state Department of Environmental Quality.

In a different part of the state, the Red Rock fire, located around 15 miles west of the small city of Salmon, has burned nearly 70,000 acres in the Salmon-Challis National Forest, according to an update from Saturday. This fire, which originated from a lightning strike, is currently only 19% contained.

Over 600 firefighters are on the ground battling the blaze, utilizing controlled burns near forest roads in an effort to limit the fire’s spread. Additionally, bulldozers are constructing fire lines moving southward.

About 7 miles to the north, the Garden Fire has charred nearly 10,000 acres with no control measures in place.

Regarding both fires, Loretta Benavidez, a spokesperson for the U.S. Forest Service, informed YSL News that fire activity is expected to be “quieter” this weekend due to slightly cooler temperatures. “We must take it one day at a time,” she stated.

The smoke has also resulted in “shading,” where particle matter blocks sunlight, helping to lower temperatures and increase humidity.

As a result, state officials have issued an air quality advisory for the area lasting until early next week. The smoke particles could pose respiratory risks for children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health issues, according to officials. They advise individuals to minimize vigorous or extended outdoor activities.
