Jamie Foxx Returns to the Stage, Expresses ‘Pure Joy’ After Health Scare
Jamie Foxx has made a comeback to the stage.
The 56-year-old Oscar-winning actor and comedian recently held a series of solo performances in Atlanta, where he opened up about the health crisis he faced last year. In an Instagram update on Monday, Foxx posted several pictures from his show, including one where he appears to wipe away tears, stating that his “soul is filled with nothing but pure joy.”
“I was able to share my story, and there was no better place than Atlanta, Georgia,” he expressed. “Thank you, Atlanta! You showed up and showed out. It has been 18 years since I last performed, but I desperately needed the stage and an audience filled with love, which is exactly what you provided.”
In April 2023, Foxx was hospitalized due to a health issue that was not disclosed at the time. His family kept the details sparse, but by July, a video surfaced on social media where the “Django Unchained” actor shared more about his experience. He recalled suffering from a “severe headache” on April 11, asking for an Advil, and then being “out for 20 days.”
“I don’t recall anything,” Foxx revealed. “I was in Atlanta, and my sister and daughter took me to the first doctor. I received a cortisone shot, but the next doctor indicated, ‘Something’s not right here.’”
In March, Foxx shared during an African American Film Critics Association awards luncheon that he intended to discuss his health incident on stage. “Everyone is curious about what happened, and I’m ready to share it, but I’ll do it my way,” he stated, promising to convey it with humor.
Foxx later announced a solo performance where he intended to narrate his journey through a significant health scare, infused with humor and inspiration.
However, he described his show on Instagram as more than stand-up comedy; it was an “artistic explanation” of an event that “went horribly wrong.” He expressed gratitude to “the wonderful people in Atlanta, especially at Piedmont Hospital,” who helped him return to the stage and pursue his passion.
Gayle King attended one of Foxx’s performances and shared a video from backstage on Instagram. Foxx confided that reopening his “wounds” was “painful” and he felt anxious about the audience’s reaction to his performance. He confirmed that the show was being recorded for a Netflix special, as mentioned in King’s caption.
“I refuse to go through this ordeal again,” Foxx remarked in King’s video. “The next time I tell jokes, they will start with, ‘Knock knock.’”
