Jim Harbaugh, Chargers Coach, Provides Health Update
Jim Harbaugh, the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, reported that he is feeling well after consulting with a heart specialist on Monday. His heart issue caused him to briefly leave the game in which the Chargers triumphed over the Denver Broncos with a score of 23-16.
“I had it examined this morning, and it was as I suspected—an atrial flutter,” Harbaugh explained. “I’m addressing it and getting back to work.”
The coach mentioned he will be monitored with a heart device for the next two weeks and will start medication to manage his heart rate effectively.
Harbaugh indicated he has discussed the situation with his family, including his brother John, who is the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens.
“They are aware of my strong commitment,” Harbaugh expressed. “It would require my heart to stop for me not to be present on the sidelines.”
This coming Monday night, Harbaugh and the Chargers will head to Arizona to compete against the Cardinals in Week 7.
“I’m quite confident that I understand the situation and the way to handle it,” Harbaugh stated. “But naturally, I will rely on the doctors for their guidance.”
What Happened to Jim Harbaugh?
During the first quarter of the Week 6 matchup against Denver, Harbaugh encountered an episode of atrial flutter.
The medical staff accompanied him to the locker room during the team’s first offensive drive in the early moments of the quarter.
The 60-year-old coach mentioned that doctors administered an IV and conducted tests in the locker room to stabilize his heartbeat. He returned to the field with just over seven minutes left in the first quarter and successfully completed the game.
“I felt good, so I decided to get back on the field,” Harbaugh remarked after the game.
He also disclosed that he has dealt with arrhythmia issues in the past, in 1999 and 2012 while he was coaching the San Francisco 49ers.
