Justin Baldoni Responds to Ryan Reynolds’ Allegations of Weight-Shaming Blake Lively

Justin Baldoni claims Ryan Reynolds accused him of weight-shaming Blake Lively

After criticizing The New York Times for reporting what he called “false” claims made by Blake Lively, actor Justin Baldoni is now targeting Ryan Reynolds in his legal case.

On New Year’s Eve, Lively filed a lawsuit against the director of “It Ends with Us,” accusing him of sexual harassment and inflicting “severe emotional distress.” In response, Baldoni initiated a lawsuit against The New York Times for libel, invasion of privacy, promissory fraud, and breach of implied contract.

In a detailed 87-page complaint submitted in Los Angeles Superior Court and reviewed by YSL News, Baldoni’s attorneys argue that the publication relied heavily on Lively’s “unverified” story, misleading the public in the process. Baldoni also included Lively’s husband, Reynolds, in the lawsuit, alleging that the “Deadpool” actor acted “aggressively” toward him in his attempts to defend his wife.

YSL News has reached out to Reynolds’ representatives for their side of the story.

Baldoni, along with nine other plaintiffs—including publicists Melissa Nathan and Jennifer Abel, as well as producers Jamey Heath and Steve Sarowitz—are seeking $250 million in damages.

Justin Baldoni claims Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively made ‘unauthorized changes’ to the ‘It Ends with Us’ script

Even though Baldoni was the director and producer of the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s book, it was Reynolds who was notably credited by Lively for his creative input.

“The iconic rooftop scene was actually written by my husband,” Lively shared with E! News during the film’s promotional events. “Nobody knew that until now… We support each other. He contributes to everything I do, and I do the same for him. His successes are my successes and vice versa. He had a hand in this film.”

The film’s screenwriter, Christy Hall, mentioned to People magazine that she was not informed of Reynolds’ involvement in writing that scene.

Baldoni’s legal filing referenced an interview Lively gave on the red carpet during the New York City premiere of “It Ends with Us,” suggesting that this was also the first time the plaintiffs became aware that Reynolds made unauthorized alterations to the script without any formal role in the production. The legal documents cite that Lively’s changes caused alarm among the producers and crew.

According to Baldoni’s team, Lively began making “daily alterations” to the script, raising concerns among producers and the crew that these changes could disrupt the shooting schedule.

They noted that “each filming day was meticulously organized, and her ongoing modifications added considerable stress and financial pressure on the production crew.”

Justin Baldoni claims Ryan Reynolds ‘aggressively confronted’ him

Just weeks prior to the “It Ends with Us” premiere in New York City, Baldoni alleges that Reynolds “aggressively confronted him” during a meeting in their New York penthouse, accusing him of “fat shaming” Lively.

The legal documents state that in an effort to avoid further conflict with Lively and Reynolds and to maintain a good relationship with his co-star, Baldoni “complied with her demands.”

The suit claims the “inappropriate and humiliating confrontation” from Reynolds occurred while other celebrity friends were present and was triggered by Baldoni’s reasonable questions regarding vital safety information for a scene.

Baldoni is dealing with back problems, including several bulging discs, according to his legal team. While preparing for a scene where his character Ryle would lift Lively’s character Lily, Baldoni inquired with his trainer, introduced by Lively, about her weight to ensure he could safely perform the lift without risking injury.

This question apparently reached Lively, who later informed her husband, Ryan Reynolds.

“The resulting confrontation was so intense that Baldoni felt he had to repeatedly apologize, even though his question was completely fair and well-intentioned,” the court document states. “Following this incident, Lively chose not to perform the lift scene, despite it having been rehearsed with a stunt double.”

Blake Lively’s lawsuit presents a different view on body and weight concerns

In the lawsuit filed Tuesday in a New York federal court and reviewed by YSL News, Lively interprets Baldoni’s question about her weight as body shaming following the birth of her fourth child, son Olin, in early 2023.

According to her lawsuit, Baldoni “frequently belittled” Lively by covertly criticizing her appearance and weight. “Just weeks before filming began, and only months after having given birth, Lively was mortified to discover that Baldoni had secretly contacted her fitness trainer without her consent and suggested that she should lose weight within two weeks.”

“Baldoni expressed to the trainer that his inquiry was out of concern for a scene where he would need to lift Ms. Lively, but such a scene didn’t actually exist,” claims the lawsuit.

Justin Baldoni accuses Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds of pressuring WME to sever ties with him

As the promotional activities for “It Ends with Us” approached, Baldoni alleges Lively directed Sony to inform that she and the cast would be unwilling to participate in any promotion alongside him.

Subsequently, Baldoni claims he was informed that during the premiere of his film “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Reynolds confronted Baldoni’s agent at William Morris Endeavor and insisted the agent “drop” Baldoni.

“The exertion of power and influence became very apparent,” the documents indicate. “Baldoni and Wayfarer began to dread what actions Lively and Reynolds might take, as their behavior seemed aimed at ruining Baldoni’s career and personal life.”

However, in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter on New Year’s Day, WME disputes Baldoni’s assertions.

“Baldoni’s filing includes an allegation that Reynolds pressured Baldoni’s agent at the premiere of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ This is incorrect,” the agency stated. “Baldoni’s previous representative did not attend the premiere, and at no point did Reynolds or Lively pressure anyone to dismiss Baldoni as a client.”

YSL News reached out to representatives for Reynolds at WME for further comments.

Baldoni was terminated by WME on December 21, mere hours after The New York Times published a story highlighting Lively’s allegations of sexual harassment.
