Kim Kardashian Advocates for Increased Pay for Incarcerated Firefighters: ‘I See Them as Heroes’

Kim Kardashian is raising her voice in favor of higher wages for firefighters who are currently incarcerated.

The 44-year-old star of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” took to Instagram on Saturday to commend the inmates participating in the relief efforts during the severe wildfires in Southern California.

Kardashian highlighted that “there are hundreds of incarcerated firefighters, putting their lives on the line to protect us” but contended that they are not adequately compensated for their efforts.

“They receive nearly nothing, risk their lives, and some have even died to demonstrate to the community that they have changed and are now serving as first responders,” she expressed. “I view them as heroes.”

According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, over 900 incarcerated firefighters are currently engaged in firefighting operations across California, working tirelessly to create firebreaks and remove materials that could fuel the flames.

Incarcerated firefighters earn between $5.80 and $10.24 per day based on their skills, with an additional $1 per hour during active emergencies, the CDCR stated. In comparison, the minimum wage in California stands at $16.50 per hour.

“During emergencies, teams may work 24-hour shifts followed by 24 hours of rest,” the department clarified. “For instance, a firefighter at the lowest skill level would make $26.90 for a single 24-hour emergency shift. They are also compensated during their rest periods.”

Moreover, incarcerated firefighters can earn two days off their prison sentence for every day they work.

In her Instagram post, Kardashian, an ongoing advocate for criminal justice reform, directly addressed California Governor Gavin Newsom. She urged him to “take action like no governor has in 40 years and elevate the pay for incarcerated firefighters to a level that honors those risking their lives to protect our lives and homes.”

The reality TV personality has previously announced her intent to contribute to the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation during this crisis. She also revealed that her clothing brand Skims would be making a significant donation of underwear, clothing, and socks to Baby2Baby to assist those affected by the fires.
