Kim Kardashian Expresses Gratitude Over Potential Resentencing of Menendez Brothers

Kim Kardashian applauds potential resentencing of Menendez brothers: ‘I am thankful’

Kim Kardashian has expressed her support for the recent developments in the Menendez brothers’ case, involving Lyle and Erik Menendez.

The advocate for reform in criminal justice praised Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón’s recommendation for resentencing the Menendez brothers in a two-part Instagram post on Thursday.

“The Menendez brothers are being given a second chance and will wake up tomorrow eligible for a parole hearing. They might be free in as little as 6 months,” Kardashian noted in her lengthy statement.

Gascón informed reporters that he will submit his recommendation to the court on Friday, advocating for the reconsideration of their parole eligibility. The sentence for two counts of murder can lead to 50 years to life imprisonment; however, as the brothers were under the age of 26 when the crimes were committed, Gascón mentioned that they are immediately eligible for parole under California law.

The Menendez brothers were convicted in 1996 of murdering their parents, José and Kitty Menendez, after their highly publicized initial trial ended in a mistrial when they shot their parents at their Beverly Hills home.

Kardashian added in her post: “Thank you, George Gascón, for reconsidering the Menendez brothers’ case and correcting a grave injustice. Your dedication to truth and fairness is noteworthy,” acknowledging that “the media attention, particularly following Ryan Murphy’s TV show, helped shed light on the abuses and inequities in their case.”

Ryan Murphy’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story” reignited public interest in the brothers’ narrative this year. The series, based on real events, focuses on the Menendez brothers and revisits their claims of having acted in self-defense after enduring years of sexual abuse from their father.

Kardashian expressed her faith in “the evolving nature of the justice system and my gratitude for a society that allows us to question decisions and pursue justice,” encouraging her 360 million followers to “keep questioning.”

The entrepreneur further stated that “our society’s comprehension of child abuse has advanced, and social media allows us to challenge established systems. This case underlines the need to question decisions and seek truth, even when guilt isn’t disputed.”

Kim Kardashian previously advocated for the Menendez brothers’ release in an essay

“We are all products of our environments. Our experiences shape who we were, who we have become, and who we will be. The passage of time physically and psychologically alters us; I doubt anyone would claim to be the same person they were at 18,” she penned.

Kardashian has emerged as a prominent advocate for criminal justice reform in recent years, even passing the California “baby bar” exam in 2021 and lobbying both the Trump and Biden administrations regarding criminal justice matters.
