Lupita Nyong’o Remembers Chadwick Boseman on Fourth Anniversary of His Passing: ‘Grief is Ongoing’

Lupita Nyong’o is taking time to remember the sorrow she feels as she marks four years since her co-star Chadwick Boseman passed away.

The actress, known for her role in “Us,” posted a touching black-and-white image of the late star from “Black Panther” on Instagram on the anniversary of his death. In her caption, she shared a poignant quote regarding grief from an anonymous source.

“Grief never ends,” she wrote. “But it evolves. It is a journey, not a destination. Grief does not indicate weakness, nor is it a lack of faith. It is the cost of love.”

She concluded with, “Always remembering Chadwick Boseman. Forever.” The post featured a sweet photo of herself and Boseman smiling together.

Chadwick Boseman, who played the lead role in “Black Panther,” passed away on August 28, 2020, at the age of 43 after a long battle with colon cancer. His health struggles were not publicly known until after his death.

The loss of the beloved actor triggered a wave of mourning from fans and colleagues alike. Nyong’o expressed her difficulty in coming to terms with the reality of speaking about Boseman in the past tense.

“It feels wrong,” she shared in 2020. “Hearing the news of his passing hits me hard every day. I acknowledge our mortality, yet there are certain individuals in life that embody an eternal spirit, as if they’ve been here forever, perfectly positioned in the moment – right here! … they seem ageless. Chadwick was one of those people.”

This year, Nyong’o played a character facing terminal illness in “A Quiet Place: Day One,” and she revealed to YSL News that filming helped her process her grief over Boseman.

“I’ve been reflecting on life and death, and this movie brought me closer to seeking clarity on the painful questions I’ve been grappling with since losing my friend,” she said. “It was daunting to immerse myself in that fragile space while making this film; I was hesitant to confront it. But embracing the knowledge that we will eventually depart this Earth makes living all the more meaningful.”

On the third anniversary of Boseman’s death in 2023, Nyong’o expressed that receiving the news was a uniquely painful experience, noting that it took her months to once again feel joyful.
