A highly anticipated college football matchup featuring the then-No. 1 Texas and then-No. 4 Georgia was temporarily halted on Saturday after students from Texas threw debris onto the field at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium.

On Monday, Texas alumnus and Longhorns “Minister of Culture,” Matthew McConaughey, shared a message on X (previously known as Twitter) aimed at Texas fans, labeling the act as “not cool” and a “bogey move.” He emphasized that Longhorn Nation is “better than that.”

“First off, you were on fire Saturday night when we faced Georgia. Great job. Let’s keep that energy going. Even though our Horns didn’t come out on top, you provided a genuine home-field advantage,” McConaughey noted in his message, as he has been a familiar presence at Texas games in recent years.

“However, let’s address the situation regarding the bottles thrown onto the field. Not acceptable. Bogey move. Sure, that call was frustrating, but we are above that. Longhorn Nation knows how to represent with style and still maintain our dignity. So moving forward, let’s put that kind of behavior behind us. We need to agree on that.”

The controversial call that led to this incident occurred in the third quarter when officials ruled a defensive pass interference against Texas. After a delay, the ruling was reversed, sparking frustration from Georgia coach Kirby Smart during the postgame discussions.

The SEC announced on Sunday that Texas would be fined $250,000 for the disruption caused during the game, which violated its policies regarding sportsmanship, game management, and alcohol policies. Additionally, the conference mandated that Texas identify fans who threw objects, with those found culpable banned from all Texas-related events through the 2024-25 athletic year.

“Throwing debris and interrupting gameplay is unacceptable at any SEC event,” stated SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. “The SEC has the responsibility to uphold its sportsmanship and game management policies, and these actions are an extension of that obligation, including the financial penalties and required investigations.”
