Meryl Streep and Melissa McCarthy Surprise ‘Only Murders’ Cast by Taking on a Fight Scene Themselves

Meryl Streep and Melissa McCarthy Stun ‘Only Murders’ Co-Stars by Performing Their Own Fight

In the latest episode of “Only Murders in the Building,” we see the podcasting trio in action, featuring a dramatic confrontation between Meryl Streep and Melissa McCarthy’s characters who surprisingly opted to perform the scene without their stunt doubles. The episode also includes a marriage proposal, adding to the excitement. Let’s get right into it!

To avoid the season’s persistent killer and relentless hidden cameras, Charles (played by Steve Martin), Oliver, and Mabel (Selena Gomez) escape their Upper West Side apartment in the seventh episode (currently available on Hulu) and head to Long Island to visit Charles’ estranged sister.

Introducing Doreen (McCarthy), who is a delightful character with her frosted pixie cut, hoop earrings, and sparkling mauve lip gloss. Her home is like a dollhouse come to life, filled with an impressive array of dolls displayed on bookshelves, the mantelpiece, and even positioned on the sofa beside her guests.

One doll stands out and may catch the eye of Taylor Swift fans trained to spot Easter eggs. In one moment, Mabel is seen on the sofa next to a life-sized doll that resembles Swift, outfitted with a shirt featuring the number 87—the number worn by Swift’s boyfriend, Travis Kelce, as he sets NFL records with the Kansas City Chiefs.

“That’s just a funny coincidence,” Gomez noted in an interview, claiming she didn’t notice the similarity at first.

“I think the crew often includes little surprises,” Martin added. (YSL News has reached out to Hulu for more details.)

The cast was also taken aback by another thrilling moment in the episode: the intense altercation between Doreen and Oliver’s girlfriend Loretta (Streep). Loretta, believing Oliver broke up with her via text, arrives from Los Angeles. Doreen, who has developed a bit of a crush on Oliver, is not pleased about Loretta’s presence.

This jealousy leads to a heated confrontation.

“Don’t tell me to calm down! Why don’t you head back to Beverly Hills?” Doreen shouts, shoving Loretta.

“You need to leave my home, you Hollywood hussy,” she continues, pushing Loretta, who tumbles over the back of a sofa. Doreen then jumps onto the couch and grabs Loretta, shoving one of her signature pigtails into her mouth.

“Why are you eating your braids?” Doreen inquires as Loretta struggles to break free. Loretta, feigning concern for her pacemaker, uses it as an excuse to escape Doreen’s grip.

“I was just acting,” Loretta retorts and manages to push Doreen away with a kick.

Loretta then climbs on top of Doreen and begins playfully hitting her with a fake braid that Doreen had worn to catch Oliver’s attention.

When Martin first read the episode’s script, he anticipated a hilarious scene with Meryl Streep and Melissa McCarthy battling it out. What surprised him was how eager the actresses were to perform the scene themselves.

“We thought, ‘Let’s practice,’ and then Melissa and Meryl just went for it—over the sofas, doing everything themselves,” Martin shared. “I was amazed! My jaw dropped!”

“They didn’t require any stunt doubles!” Gomez exclaimed. “They were amazing!”

“They truly committed to the scene,” Martin continued, “and I believed it would be one of the funniest moments ever.”

“I was there,” Short added, “but when I finally saw it all edited together, I was still shocked to see Meryl and Melissa involved so fully. It’s aggressive and hilarious.”

The episode also delivers an emotional moment as Loretta proposes to Oliver, revealing she knows he has been contemplating engagement. “Despite your evident issues, I’m still here,” Loretta professes. “I’m not going anywhere and I’m ready to embrace your craziness for life.”

She then presents a pearl doll’s bracelet from her hand. “Oliver, I’m proposing to you,” she declares. “I want to marry you.”

“Before I say yes, just out of curiosity, is there any money from your family?” he quips before conceding, followed by a kiss with his fiancée.

Martin humorously remarked that initially, Short believed the engagement to Streep was genuine.

“I kept insisting, ‘No, everyone. I recognize real,’” Short recalls, having fun with the situation. He describes the engagement scene in the script as “charming.”

“It made sense because, by the end of Season 3, it felt like this couple still had more to explore and that marriage was the next logical step,” Short explains.
