Michelle Yeoh discusses her journey with infertility: ‘My greatest sorrow’

Michelle Yeoh has opened up about her challenges with infertility.

In a recent chat on BBC Radio’s “Woman’s Hour,” the 62-year-old Oscar winner shared that she “always envisioned” having children, but realized she was unable to after marrying her first husband, Dickson Poon, in 1988.

After struggling to conceive, Yeoh pursued fertility treatments.

“Each month, it felt like such a letdown, and you begin to question, ‘Why?'” she explained. “Eventually, you stop blaming yourself. There are aspects of your body that simply don’t work the way they should. That’s just how it is. You have to find a way to let go and move forward. You reach a stage where you can no longer point fingers at yourself.”

However, the star of “Wicked” mentioned that reaching acceptance took quite a while, and thoughts about it still linger. She revealed that her inability to have children significantly contributed to the end of her first marriage, which was centered around the desire to have kids. Yeoh and Poon divorced in 1992, and she is now a godmother to his daughter.

In 2023, Yeoh tied the knot with Jean Todt after being engaged for 19 years. Todt has a son named Nicolas from a prior marriage. Earlier this year, Yeoh announced that Nicolas had become a parent, making her a grandmother for the first time. “We feel incredibly blessed,” she shared on Instagram.

During her “Woman’s Hour” appearance, the “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” actress expressed that she feels “very, very fortunate” to have a child in her life, even without having her own.

In another interview with The Times, Yeoh referred to her inability to have children as “the biggest sadness in my life,” but she added, “the silver lining is that I have six godchildren, along with numerous nephews and nieces. I don’t have regrets because I have always given my all.”

Yeoh once mentioned to Bustle that she was ready to step away from acting to focus on starting a family, but when she found out she couldn’t have children, she returned to her career, leading to her standout performances in films like “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.”

She later made history as the first Asian woman to win the best actress Oscar for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” in 2023. “Ladies, never let anyone tell you that you are past your prime,” Yeoh emphasized during her acceptance speech. In May, President Biden honored her with a presidential medal of freedom.
