New Research Shows Plugged Wells and Decreased Injection Rates Diminish Induced Earthquake Occurrences in Oklahoma

Wastewater injection resulting from oil and gas production in Oklahoma caused a dramatic rise in seismic activity in the state between 2009 and 2015. But regulatory efforts to backfill some injection wells with cement and reduce injection volumes have been effective in lowering the state's induced earthquake rate, according to a new study. Weather Update: Heatwave Affects the Midwest; Hawaii Prepares for Two Hurricanes

This week, a late summer heatwave will engulf the upper Midwest, while storms loom over the Hawaiian Islands.

Excessive heat warnings are expected in cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis at least once this week, with a majority of the area under heat advisories.

The National Weather Service noted, “With forecasted highs in the mid-90s to nearly 100°F and high humidity, heat indices could reach between 105°F and 115°F, prompting widespread heat-related advisories and warnings.”

Meanwhile, Hawaii is preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Gilma, following the impact of Hurricane Hone, which brought heavy rainfall and strong winds.

As noted by AccuWeather, it’s been since 1992 since two named storms have been within 300 miles of the main Hawaiian Islands in a single week.

Here’s an essential weather overview for the week starting August 26.

Second Hurricane Threat for Hawaii

On Sunday, Hawaii experienced the effects of Hurricane Hone, which dumped nearly 18 inches of rain on parts of the state by afternoon, as reported by the National Weather Service.

Maui was hit with winds reaching up to 60 mph as the storm remained about 175 miles southeast of Honolulu.

Now, Hurricane Gilma is approaching, currently positioned approximately 1,400 miles east of the Big Island, boasting sustained winds of up to 115 mph.

According to the hurricane center, Gilma is expected to weaken as the week progresses, maintaining hurricane strength through early Tuesday but losing intensity as it nears Hawaii late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

Return of Summer and Heat in the Midwest

The Midwest is set for a significant heatwave, leading to numerous heat advisories and excessive heat warnings.

The NWS cautioned that “Individuals lacking proper air conditioning or those who must work outdoors will face an increased risk of heat-related illnesses.”

The West, which had been experiencing early fall-like conditions, will also feel summer returning strongly this week.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Grady Gilman mentioned that “Some areas could experience a rise in afternoon high temperatures of up to 35 degrees over just a few days.”

This spike in temperatures and dry weather conditions will escalate fire risks in those regions recently affected by wildfires.

AccuWeather stated, “High fire risk remains in effect as the storm that previously brought cooler temperatures moves through the interior West by the weekend.”
