New York Jets appoint Darren Mougey as their new general manager
The New York Jets have filled their head coach and general manager roles.
On Saturday, the Jets announced the hiring of Darren Mougey as their new general manager, eliminating another vacancy in the NFL as it works to reduce its unemployment rate.
At 39 years old, Mougey comes from the Denver Broncos, where he experienced a rapid career ascent, receiving three promotions since 2020. His impressive 12-year tenure with the Broncos concludes with this latest advancement. Mougey, who served as the assistant general manager, is now set to lead the team in Florham Park, N.J.
The search process for the Jets took some time following the release of head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas during the prior season. Throughout their search, New York interviewed over 30 candidates for these pivotal positions before determining Mougey and Aaron Glenn as their selections.
With this hiring, the Jacksonville Jaguars remain the sole NFL team looking to fill a general manager vacancy.
Here’s what you should know about Mougey.
Who is Darren Mougey?
Mougey played college football at San Diego State University, where he crossed paths with Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell. Their relationship has continued over the years, but Mougey shifted into a front office career a few years after completing college.
He started with the Broncos as a scouting intern in 2012 and has been with the organization ever since, culminating in his new role with the Jets. Mougey progressed to personnel and scouting assistant in 2013, then to a college and pro personnel scout in 2014.
His career trajectory soared in 2015 when he became an area scout, a position he held until the end of the 2019 season.
From there, his promotions kept coming: he served as the assistant director of college scouting in 2020, director of player personnel in 2021, and was named assistant general manager in 2022.
Mougey has seen the organization through six head coaches and two general managers while becoming a key member of the Broncos staff.
According to NFL Network’s Peter Schrager, he was viewed as a “sounding board” for Sean Payton. Payton is also known to have a strong connection with the Jets’ new head coach, offering insight into the influences shaping the team’s leadership.
