Revealing Mysteries: How Asteroid Grains Illuminate the Birth of the Outer Solar System

Tiny grains from asteroid Ryugu are revealing clues to the magnetic forces that shaped the far reaches of the solar system over 4.6 billion years ago. The findings suggest the distal solar system harbored a weak magnetic field, which could have played a role in forming the giant planets and other objects. Tiny grains from

Oregon tops the College Football Playoff rankings as SEC teams dominate the top 25

On Tuesday, the first College Football Playoff rankings featuring the new expanded 12-team format were unveiled, marking a historic moment.

There was little suspense as Oregon secured the top position, mirroring its status in the US LBM Coaches Poll.

The real question heading into these rankings was which team would be placed behind the Ducks. Both Georgia and Ohio State made strong arguments for the second spot with their victories over Texas and Penn State respectively, along with close losses to Alabama and Oregon. Ultimately, the committee ranked Ohio State from the Big Ten at No. 2 and Georgia at No. 3.

Following the top three, Miami—one of two unbeaten teams in the ACC—takes the No. 4 position, with Texas next in line. The rest of the top 10 are Penn State, Tennessee, Indiana, Brigham Young, and Notre Dame, listed in that order.

It’s no surprise that the SEC leads the rankings with eight teams included. Alabama is just outside the top 10, while LSU, Texas A&M, and Missouri are positioned in the lower half of the rankings. The ACC follows with five teams represented, while the Big Ten has four teams, all within the top 10. The Big 12 also has four teams on the list, and no other conference has more than one team represented.

Boise State, ranked No. 12, is the top team from the Group of Five conferences, ranking 13 spots ahead of No. 25 Army. The leading champion from the G5 conferences will guarantee at least one playoff spot. If the Broncos end their season strong, they could secure a first-round bye, especially if they finish ahead of a Power Four champion. BYU is the only Big 12 team ranked higher than them, with only Miami from the ACC ahead in the rankings.

This is the first of five rankings that the College Football Playoff committee will release. The next three rankings will be published every Tuesday leading up to the final weekend of the season, with the crucial rankings coming out on Sunday, Dec. 8, when the 12 playoff teams and their bracket will be revealed.

What is the College Football Playoff schedule?

The top four conference champions in the final rankings will receive a bye. The first round will take place at campus sites, with matchups as follows: No. 5 versus No. 12, No. 6 against No. 11, No. 7 competing with No. 10, and No. 8 going up against No. 9.

The victors of these matchups will progress to the quarterfinals at the Fiesta, Sugar, Peach, and Rose bowls, scheduled for either Dec. 31 or Jan. 1. The Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl will host the semifinals on Jan. 9 and Jan. 10, respectively.

The championship game is set for Jan. 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
