Can chickens fly?
Indeed, chickens can fly, but their flying ability is limited to short distances. Unlike many other birds, chickens have not been bred for the purpose of flying. Most domesticated chickens are specifically bred for food production rather than flight, as noted by BBC Wildlife Magazine.
Domesticated chickens are descendants of the red junglefowl from Southeast Asia, a bird capable only of brief flights and taking off from trees.
Since chickens are largely bred for consumption, this impacts their flying ability. Modern breeding focuses on larger muscles, such as āfat thighs and big breast muscles,ā which adds extra weight and makes flying more challenging, according to BBC Wildlife Magazine.
The record for the longest chicken flight stands at 13 seconds and covers a distance of over 300 feet.
What is the lifespan of a chicken?
A chicken’s lifespan can vary, but on average, hens live for about six to eight years, as reported by the University of Wisconsin-Madison. They typically produce eggs for three to four years during this time.
The oldest recorded chicken, named Peanut from Michigan, was born in 2002, making her approximately 22 years old, according to Guinness World Records.
What do chickens consume?
Chickens are natural foragers, according to Purina Mills. Their diet includes a variety of vegetables, herbs, and perennial plants, such as:
- Lettuce, beets, broccoli, carrots, kale, swiss chard, squash, pumpkins, and cucumber
- Lavender, mint, oregano, parsley, cilantro, thyme, and basil
- Daylilies, hostas, daisies, roses, coneflowers, and ferns
However, there are certain foods that should be avoided, including:
- Avocado pits and skins
- Undercooked or dried beans
- Rhubarb
- Moldy or rotten foods, as well as salty foods
