Stephen Amell’s Surprising Journey: From ‘NCIS’ Spinoff to ‘Suits’ Star

Stephen Amell was focused on ‘NCIS’ spinoff when he landed ‘Suits’ gig

For actor Stephen Amell, when one opportunity slipped away, another surfaced.

The star of “Arrow” discussed how he auditioned for the “Suits” spinoff “Suits: LA” shortly after trying out for “NCIS: Origins.” During this time, his main focus was indeed “NCIS,” which he revealed on the podcast “Inside of You With Michael Rosenbaum” earlier this month.

He auditioned for the lead role, likely that of a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs, which ultimately went to Austin Stowell.

“If it had come to me as an offer, I’m not sure I would have accepted it,” said Amell, 43. “But I was thrilled at the idea that this was for a network show, especially during pilot season. That’s becoming quite rare these days.”

The Canadian actor received “great feedback” from his “NCIS” audition and heard that “We think this is likely going to proceed.” However, he admitted he hadn’t even reviewed the script for “Suits” when his “NCIS” prospects fell through.

“Suddenly, everything fell apart. I didn’t know what was happening and felt incredibly frustrated,” he recounted. The rejection, along with other pressures, including solo parenting his two children “every week,” led to a “complete breakdown,” where he found himself “in the car, emotional, yelling” on the phone with his wife, Cassandra Jean Amell.

Amell described staring at himself in the mirror before his “Suits” audition and noticing that his eyes looked bloodshot.

“I entered that audition without any fear,” Amell stated.

Ultimately, Amell secured the role of Ted Black, the lead in “Suits: LA.” He mentioned that the spinoff closely mirrors the original series but has a slightly “different vibe.”

“Looking back, I realized I got the role I was meant to have, and that everything happens for a reason,” he remarked.
