‘Grief-filled wails’: 4 fatalities in Birmingham, Alabama shooting termed a ‘hit’

In Birmingham, Alabama, at least four individuals were killed and over a dozen injured during a shooting in the entertainment district on Saturday night. Police Chief Scott Thurmond referred to the incident as a “hit.”
According to Chief Thurmond, two males and one female died at the location, while a fourth male later succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. About 17 individuals were reported injured, some of whom were taken to hospitals by emergency responders, while others sought medical help independently.
The shooters arrived in a vehicle around 11 p.m., exited, and fired into a crowd gathered in the lively Five Points South district, known for its restaurants and nightlife. They then fled the scene, leaving behind over 100 spent shell casings, Thurmond noted.
While it appears a specific individual was targeted, Chief Thurmond mentioned he was unaware of the underlying motivation for the attack.
“We think this was a hit on that specific person,” he stated.
$5,000 reward offered for details on the shooters
As no arrests have been made, investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage for leads. The FBI and ATF are collaborating on the case.
Thurmond encouraged anyone with information to come forward, stating that tips leading to an arrest could earn up to $5,000.
“We need the community to help us to take these violent individuals off the streets,” Thurmond said. “No one wants such people in our city.”
Eyewitness reports disturbing sounds
Birmingham’s Mayor Randall Woodfin indicated a Glock “switch” was utilized, which allows semiautomatic firearms to function like automatic weapons.
“Regrettably, 2024 has already seen instances of such firearm usage, with numerous bullets found at the scene, pointing to the prevalence of automatic weapons on our streets,” said Mayor Woodfin.
Dajon Singleton shared with WBMA-TV that he witnessed the emergency response amidst chaos as people panicked and fled. He saw five or six individuals being taken away on stretchers.
“It was truly heartbreaking and tragic,” he remarked. “The cries of grief instantly indicated to me that someone had lost a loved one.”
