A Man Fatally Shoots a Security Guard at the Honduran Consulate in Georgia

A Honduran citizen opened fire on a security guard at the Honduran consulate near Atlanta after refusing to surrender his firearm prior to entering the premises.

On Monday, a security guard was tragically shot dead at the Honduran consulate close to Atlanta by a man who declined to give up his weapon while trying to enter the building, according to the Honduran Foreign Minister.

The shooter, whose identity has not been made public, killed the guard and injured another individual before being apprehended, stated Emily Heenan, a spokesperson for the city of Doraville. Doraville police responded to the incident at approximately 2:30 p.m. at an office park located around 16 miles north of Atlanta’s downtown area.

A representative from the U.S. State Department expressed strong condemnation of the incident in a statement released Monday evening.

“Such attacks and threats against diplomatic facilities are completely intolerable,” the spokesperson emphasized. “We are in contact with officials at the Honduran consulate and, in line with our obligations under the Vienna Conventions, we are dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of diplomatic offices and their personnel.”

Requests for comments from the Honduran consulate in Georgia were not immediately answered.

Heenan mentioned that further details about the suspect and the victims would be provided shortly. Currently, the police are detaining the shooter, while the injured individual was transported to a hospital for medical care.

Honduran Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina disclosed during a press conference in Tegucigalpa that the shooter is a citizen of Honduras. The private security guard, unfortunately, was of Mexican descent.

“The suspect did not comply with the request to surrender his weapon and, regrettably, shot the security guard five times,” Reina stated.

Fortunately, the security guard was able to close the door, preventing the attacker from entering and potentially causing further casualties, added the foreign minister.

A witness, a Honduran national waiting to enter the consulate, managed to note the suspect’s license plate and reported it to law enforcement, Reina added.
