Trump’s Campaign Calls Out UK Labour Party for Alleged Foreign Interference

Trump’s Campaign Claims UK Labour Party is Interfering in U.S. Elections

LONDON − The campaign for former President Donald Trump lodged a formal complaint on Tuesday against the UK’s governing Labour Party, alleging “blatant foreign interference” ahead of the presidential election set for Nov. 5.

The complaint was presented in a letter from Trump’s attorney, Gary Lawkowski, to the Federal Election Commission. This action followed a Labor Party official’s public admission that nearly 100 current and former Labour staff members will travel to the U.S. to support Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democrats in critical swing states.

This information was disclosed last week in a now-deleted LinkedIn post by Sofia Patel, the Labour Party’s head of operations.

With just two weeks remaining until Election Day, Harris and Trump appear to be in a tight race for the presidency. A new Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Tuesday indicated that Harris holds a narrow national advantage over Trump, while a senior Harris advisor suggested that the outcome in each of the seven battleground states could hinge on a mere percentage point.

The complaint from Trump’s campaign raises questions about “illegal foreign campaign donations and interference” aimed at aiding Harris in the upcoming U.S. election. However, FEC regulations state that it is permissible for foreign nationals to participate as unpaid campaign volunteers in U.S. elections. Prime Minister Keir Starmer of the UK attempted to minimize the importance of the complaint on Wednesday, indicating that any Labour activists involved in U.S. campaigning were doing so on their own time and at their own costs. Traditionally, officials, activists, and strategists from the Labour Party have maintained close ties with Democrats, mirroring the relationship between Republicans and the UK’s Conservative Party.

Yet, Lawkowski’s letter, which referenced the American Revolutionary War and media reports of various meetings between Labour Party members and the Harris campaign, demanded an “immediate investigation” by the FEC into these allegations.

“Historical attempts by the British government to engage directly with voters in America did not yield positive outcomes,” Lawkowski stated in his letter, alluding to the American Revolutionary War.

“This past week marked the 243rd anniversary of the British surrender at the Battle of Yorktown, a victory that solidified the United States’ political independence from Great Britain. It seems the Labour Party and Harris for President campaign have overlooked this lesson,” he added, incorrectly spelling “Britain.”

Nigel Farage, a close ally of Trump and leader of Reform UK, remarked in a WhatsApp message to YSL News that Labour’s overtures to the Harris campaign were a “major error” and that the party is now attempting to “retract” its position regarding officials’ personal expenses in the U.S.

Lawkowski called for an “immediate investigation” by the FEC, while the Harris campaign has not yet responded.

Allegations of foreign interference have increasingly gravitated into the narrative surrounding U.S. elections in recent years. The U.S. Justice Department has issued warnings that nations such as Russia, China, and Iran represent a “clear and present danger” regarding foreign interference in the upcoming vote, spreading false information, attempting cyberattacks, and financing social media influencers. As per the Justice Department, the UK has not been identified as a threat to the integrity of the U.S. electoral process or its presidential candidates.

In response to the Trump campaign’s accusations, the Labour Party refuted the claims, causing several British media sources to highlight that this complaint could jeopardize Starmer’s potential relationship with Trump if he were to regain the presidency.

“Keir Starmer’s relationship with Trump could worsen,” was a headline featured Wednesday in “The Spectator magazine,” known for its conservative leanings.

According to British bookmaker Betfair Exchange, following the filing of this complaint, Trump’s odds of winning the U.S. election have improved to 5/8, indicating a 62% chance, marking the best odds he has had compared to previous elections. In 2020, Betfair recorded him at 3/1 or a 33% chance. In 2016, his odds were even more distant at 6/1, or a 15% chance of winning.
